SBU Football Falls 49-7 to Houston Baptist

Houston, TX - The Bearcat Football Team fell to Houston Baptist University by a score of 49-7 Saturday evening. With the loss, the Bearcats begin the season 0-1 (0-0 GLVC). 

Southwest Baptist won the coin toss and elected to defer. The Bearcats held the Huskies on their first drive, allowing only two first downs and forcing a punt. SBU was faced with a third-and-five on their first drive, but Dylan Mountain broke free with a 34 yard run to extend the drive. Another third down situation arose, but Mountain found Eric Knight for the first down. The drive would stall there, forcing a punt. 

Houston Baptist began their second drive at their own 20 yard line. On the eighth play of the drive, they managed to score a 42 yard rushing touchdown, giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead. Southwest Baptist completed a couple third down situations on their second drive, but couldn't get anything else going. A lightning delay began with 2:13 left in the 1st quarter and lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes. 

The Huskies started with the ball after the rain delay, maintaining possession into the end of the 1st quarter. They attempted a 53 yard field goal, but missed wide left. The Bearcats completed a quick first down, but their drive came to an abrupt stop after an HBU interception. The SBU defense forced a quick three-and-out to get their offense back on the field. The Bearcats couldn't get anything going offensively, but the Huskies drove the field and scored a touchdown, giving them a 14-0 lead.

Going into halftime, Houston Baptist took a commanding 28-0 lead. To begin the second half, the Bearcats completed one first down on a three yard Eric Knight rush before being forced to punt. After the punt, HBU and SBU swapped three-and-outs. Houston Baptist then connected on a 29 yard touchdown pass to give them a 35-0 lead. The Huskies would score once more before the third quarter ended, giving them a 42-0 lead.

Southwest Baptist started the fourth quarter strong, driving down the field and scoring on an Eric Knight 1 yard rushing touchdown. The drive was highlighted by passes complete from Dylan Mountain to Bryce Cabrera, Matt Lechuga, and Connor Ratcliff. Houston Baptist would find the end zone once more, finishing the game with a score of 49-7 in favor of the Huskies. 

Dylan Mountain picked up 64 yards on 16 rushes, leading the Bearcats. Matt Lechuga hauled in 3 receptions for 18 yards. Defensively, Tyler Curts collected 5 solo tackles and 7 assists. 

Southwest Baptist will be on the road again next week, taking on Mississippi College on Saturday, September 8th at 6 PM.
