Bolivar, Mo. – On a day that saw SBU pitcher Claire Miller throw all 17 innings of the doubleheader against Northeastern State in dominant fashion, the Southwest Baptist University Softball team ended up splitting a pair of games with the Riverhawks. NSU claimed the first game by a 1-0 score while SBU bounced back to win 1-0 in the second game. The Bearcats record moves to 14-25 (4-10 MIAA).
Game 1
Claire Miller got off to a great start despite walking the first batter of the game. After the walk, Miller retired six Northeastern batters in a row over the 1
st and 2
nd innings. In the bottom of the 2
nd, SBU's Kelcee Welch got in scoring position with two outs but was stranded there.
Miller then worked around a leadoff walk in the 3
rd to keep the game scoreless. However, Miller ran into trouble in the top of the 4
th. The Riverhawks batter led off the inning with a solo home run to jump on top 1-0. Miller buckled down though and stranded two runners on 1
st and 2
nd base to end the inning. In the top of the 5
th, Miller escaped more trouble to keep SBU within striking distance. The Riverhawks loaded the bases with one out, but Miller got a popup and strikeout looking to squash the threat.
The Bearcats went down in order in the bottom of the 5
th and 6
th while Miller quieted the Riverhawks lineup in the top of the 6
th and 7
th. Down to their final out in the bottom of the 7
th, SBU's Miranda Aguiliar and Stormy Greathouse strung together back-to-back singles, which put the tying and winning runs on base. Unfortunately, Morgan McMullin grounded out to end the game and give Northeastern State the 1-0 win.
Despite taking the loss, Miller (10-12) tossed all 7 innings with 9 strikeouts, 5 walks, 4 hits, and just one earned run allowed. Emily Hall, Greathouse, and Aguiliar were the only ones to record hits in the game for the Bearcats.
Game 2
After throwing a complete game in the first game, Miller started in the circle once again and showed no effects of fatigue. In both the 1
st and 2
nd inning, Miller buckled down to strand NSU runners in scoring position and keep the score deadlocked. Miller retired the last two batters in the 2
nd inning, which started a streak of sitting down 11 Riverhawk batters in a row.
In the bottom of the 4
th, SBU had a prime scoring chance. With one out, Hall walked and later reached 2
nd base when Greathouse reached via a NSU error. With two outs, Morgan McMullin singled through the left side to load the bases. The Riverhawks pitcher though got Lauren Strobel to bounce into a fielder's choice that ended the inning. In the top of the 6
th, NSU snapped Miller's retired batter streak with a leadoff single. However, Miller stranded that runner on 2
nd base to keep the score at 0-0.
With a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 7
th, SBU's Greathouse started the inning with a single, but she would not advance past first, forcing the game into extra innings. After Miller had retired another eight NSU batters in a row, the Riverhawks singled and walked with two outs in the 8
th. Miller though buckled down one more time to strand those NSU runners.
In the bottom of the 9
th, the Bearcats put together a little rally behind two walks to Greathouse and Strobel. Kori Hillenburg then came to the plate and was denied the game winning hit on a diving play from the NSU 2
nd baseman that sent the game into the 10
th. After Miller worked a 1-2-3 top of the 10
th, Jaidyn Mawhinney started the bottom of the 10
th with a leadoff single on the first pitch. Payton Wildeman followed with a single of her own. A wild pitch pushed Mawhinney to 3
rd base as the winning run and Wildeman to 2
nd base. On the second pitch she saw, Megan Schellert hit a ground ball to the shortstop. Mawhinney took off on contact and slid into home just before the throw to hand the Bearcats the 1-0 walk off victory over the Riverhawks.
Miller claimed the win (11-12), pitching 10 innings, striking out 7, and allowing no earned runs on just 4 hits. On the day, Miller threw 17 innings with only 7 hits, 1 earned run, and 16 strikeouts. In game two at the plate, Schellert went 2 for 5 and Mawhinney tallied a hit and run scored.
SBU's doubleheader against Central Oklahoma has been rescheduled to Monday, April 16
th so the Bearcats will be in action next at home on Tuesday, April 10
th for a home doubleheader against Pittsburg State.
