Maryville, Mo. – Southwest Baptist starting pitcher threw a complete game on the mound for the Bearcats but the offense struggled to find any run support as SBU fell in the series finale 4-0 to Northwest Missouri. The loss drops the Bearcats record to 16-31 (10-23 MIAA) on the season, and Northwest Missouri improves to 29-18 (23-10 MIAA).
Northwest scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the 1
st inning with an RBI double down the left field line. After Morrow fired a scoreless 2
nd inning, Northwest tacked on single runs in the bottom of the 3
rd and 4
th inning to go ahead 3-0.
In the bottom of the 5
th inning, Morrow began to settle in and keep Northwest off the scoreboard. Morrow stranded a one-out double in the 5
th inning. He retired the side in order in the bottom of the 6
th inning and then worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the 7
th inning. Moving to the top of the 8
th inning, the Bearcats put together their best scoring chance to that point in the game. Noah Tucker led off with a single. After two outs, Tyler Mathys singled to right field and Tucker advanced to 3
rd base. Andrew Meier put together a battle in the next at bat, but Meier struck out on the 8
th pitch of the at bat and SBU remained scoreless.
Northwest added a run in the bottom of the 8
th inning to make the score 4-0. In the top of the 9
th inning, the Bearcat bats persisted. Hunter Hisky led off with a single and Carl Schwettmann walked to put two runners on with no outs. However, the next three SBU hitters would be retired and the Bearcats fell by a final of 4-0.
Morrow took only his second loss of the season (8-2), throwing 8 innings with 10 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts. At the plate for SBU, Mathys, Meier, Hisky, Schwettmann, Tucker, and Luke Winfrey all had hits in the ballgame.
Southwest Baptist will return home to start their final home series of the season with a matchup against Pittsburg State on Thursday, May 3
rd at 2:00 PM from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
