Maryville, Mo. – Andrew Meier blasted his fourth homer of the season but Northwest Missouri's offense was too much as they claimed a 14-3 win in seven innings over Southwest Baptist Saturday. The loss drops SBU's record to 16-30 (10-22 MIAA) while Northwest Missouri improves to 28-18 (22-10 MIAA).
Similar to the first game of the series on Friday, Northwest Missouri jumped in front with two runs in the bottom of the 1
st inning. After surrendering the two runs, SBU starter Adam White bounced back to toss a scoreless bottom of the 2
nd inning. The Northwest Bearcats would pad their lead though in the bottom of the 3
rd inning with three runs to go up 5-0. With the SBU offense stagnant in the top of the 4
th and 5
th inning, Northwest Missouri tacked onto their advantage with a run in the 4
th inning and two more runs in the 5
th inning to go ahead 8-0.
Still seeking their first hit of the ballgame, Luke Winfrey stepped to the plate to lead off the top of the 6
th inning and delivered an infield single. A batter later, Meier belted the sixth pitch of his at bat over the right field fence to put the Bearcats on the board and bring the deficit to 8-2. In the bottom of the 6
th inning, Northwest Missouri answered with six additional runs to extend their lead to 14-2. SBU would add a run in the top of the 7
th inning on a Winfrey sacrifice fly that scored Noah Tucker to make the final 14-3 Northwest Missouri.
White took the loss (3-2) for SBU while Brad Roberts got the win (7-5) on the mound for Northwest Missouri. At the plate for SBU, Meier finished 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and a run while Winfrey and Tucker each had a hit and a run.
The two teams will play the third and final game of their weekend series at 1:00 PM tomorrow in Maryville.
