Maryville, Mo. – Clint Jack collected 4 RBI's on the day and Southwest Baptist tallied 15 runs on 17 hits. Yet the offensive eruption was still not enough as SBU dropped a 19-15 slugfest to Northwest Missouri State. The loss moves SBU's record to 16-29 (10-21 MIAA) while Northwest Missouri improves to 27-18 (21-10 MIAA).
Northwest Missouri jumped out in front with two runs in the bottom of the 1
st inning off SBU starter Brandon Hatfield, who was making his first start of the season. Hatfield would settle down though and throw consecutive zero's in the 2
nd and 3
rd innings. The SBU offense was able to take advantage as they scored four unanswered runs to go up 4-2 after the top of the 3
rd inning. The four runs came from a Don Roethler RBI double, Noah Tucker RBI single, Andrew Meier solo home run, and Clint Jack RBI single.
In the bottom of the 4
th inning, Northwest came roaring back with eight runs to take a 10-4 lead. The Bearcats immediately responded with four runs of their own in the top of the 5
th inning. Meier swatted an RBI triple that scored Luke Winfrey, and Jack smashed a three run home run to left field that cut Northwest's lead down to just 10-8. However, Northwest would score five runs in a row with two in the bottom of the 5
th inning and three in the 6
th inning to extend their margin out to 15-8.
In the top of the 7
th inning, the Bearcat bats continued to chip away. Hunter Hisky led off with a double to right field and later came around to score on an error. Patrick Latham then collected an RBI on a fielder's choice that sent in Carl Schwettmann. A Roethler double moved Latham to 3
rd base, which allowed Tucker to bring home Latham with an RBI ground out. Northwest would come right back and stretch their back to seven runs at 18-11 with three runs in the bottom of the 7
th inning. They would add one more to go up 19-11.
Despite being down eight runs, SBU did not fold in the top of the 9
th inning. Jack singled up the middle and an error on the Northwest center fielder allowed Schwettmann to scamper all the way home from 1
st base. Latham followed with an RBI single that scored Jack to make the score 19-13. Like the 7
th inning, Roethler doubled to move Latham to 3
rd base. After a strikeout, Winfrey got an RBI knock to center, scoring Latham. Tyler Mathys bounced into an RBI fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 19-15. Unfortunately, the comeback attempt would fall short as Meier bounced into a fielder's choice and Northwest claimed the high scoring 19-15 win.
Hatfield took the loss on the mound (0-1) while Joseph Hietpas got the win (8-2). At the plate for SBU, Jack finished the day 3 for 5 with a homer, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Roethler was 3 for 5 with 3 doubles, 2 runs, and a RBI. Winfrey was also 3 for 5 with a run and RBI. Latham went 2 for 5 with 2 runs, and 2 RBI while Meier was 2 for 6 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Hisky finished the host of Bearcats with multiple hits with a 2 for 4 day with 2 doubles, 3 runs, and a walk.
SBU and Northwest will play game two of the series in Maryville, Mo. at 2:00 PM tomorrow.
