Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist Softball finished their season on a high note as they utilized strong offense and dominant pitching to carry them to a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln in their final two games of the 2018 slate. The 7-1 and 11-1 victories made SBU's final record 18-33 (8-18 MIAA) for the season.
Game 1
The Bearcats opened up a lead early in the top of the 1
st inning and never looked back. Stormy Greathouse walked with one out. On the next pitch, Megan Schellert doubled into the gap in right center that sent Greathouse all the way home and put SBU up 1-0.
After three scoreless innings from Claire Miller, the Bearcats padded their advantage in the top of the 4
th inning. Lauren Strobel started the inning with a double to left field. Morgan McMullin then singled to put runners on the corners. Kelcee Welch followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Strobel and gave SBU a 2-0 lead. McMullin stole second with two outs to put herself in scoring position. After a walk to Jaidyn Mawhinney, Greathouse delivered a clutch two-out RBI single that scored McMullin and put SBU up 3-0.
In the top of the 5
th inning, the Bearcats added three more runs. Emily Hall and Payton Wildeman reached on back-to-back singles. Strobel then cleared the bases with a three-run inside-the-park home run that extended SBU's margin to 6-0. SBU added one more in the top of the 7
th inning on a solo homer from McMullin. Lincoln would score their lone run in the bottom of the 7
th to make it a 7-1 final.
Miller earned the win (13-16) with another complete game, 7 innings pitched, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. Leading SBU at the plate was Strobel with 3 hits, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored. McMullin chipped in 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Schellert also had 2 hits, an RBI, and walk.
Game 2
Almost identical to the first game, the second game began with SBU getting on the scoreboard first with an RBI double from Schellert that scored Mawhinney. In the top of the 2
nd inning, SBU added to their lead with a run. Kaley Hansen singled with one out and proceeded to steal 2
nd base. After an out, Greathouse came through again with two outs and smacked an RBI double to right center that scored Hansen.
The Bearcats got another run in the top of the 3
rd inning to make the score 3-0. Wildeman crossed home in the inning when Strobel grounded out. With starting pitcher Kaylee Schmidli continuing to hold down the Lincoln offense, SBU added to their lead again in the top of the 4
th inning. Welch began the frame with a double down the left field line.
Following an out, Welch scampered home on an error that allowed Mawhinney to reach 1
st base. Mawhinney came around to score on another error that made the score 5-0 in favor of SBU.
In the top of the 5
th inning, the Bearcat offense exploded for six runs. Jayden Gonzales drove in the first run of the inning on a squeeze bunt. Hansen drove in the next on an RBI single to extend the score to 7-0. Mawhinney tripled on the next at bat to send home Hansen. Greathouse then reached on an error that allowed Mawhinney to cross home and make the score 9-0. SBU got their final two runs to stretch the score to 11-0 on an RBI single from Hall and an error that allowed Schellert to run home. Lincoln got their only run in the bottom of the 5
th, which made the final 11-1 after five innings.
Schmidli earned the win (1-5) with a complete game, 5 innings pitched, and no earned runs allowed on 5 hits. Playing in her final game of her career, Mawhinney led the way offensively with 2 hits, a triple, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBI. Schellert also had 2 hits, a double, a run scored, and RBI. Wildeman and Hansen each had 2 hits and 2 runs scored with Hansen also chipping in an RBI.
