Morrow's Prowess on the Mound Powers SBU to Game 1 Victory over Washburn

Bolivar, Mo. - Dalton Morrow fired 8 2/3 strong innings of two run ball on the mound Friday afternoon to earn his MIAA leading 8th win of the season and guide Southwest Baptist to a 5-2 win over Washburn in game one of the weekend series. With the win, SBU improves their record to 16-25 (10-17 MIAA) on the season while Washburn drops to 13-28 (7-23 MIAA). The two teams will games two and three in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 12:00 PM. 

The game started scoreless over the first five innings with both starting pitchers showcasing their ace stuff. Morrow's only trouble came in the top of the 1st inning but he worked around two singles with a strikeout and foul out to end the frame. Morrow cruised over the next four innings, allowing just two total base runners to reach. Morrow's opponent, Josh Ramirez, was equally as good over the five frames as he scattered three hits and stranded three base runners.

In the top of the 6th inning, Washburn jumped on top with a leadoff solo homer. Morrow retired the next three batters and kept the score at 1-0 Ichabods. Immediately, SBU's offense responded and came to life in a big way in the bottom half of the 6th inning. Tyler Mathys and Andrew Meier started the inning with back-to-back singles. Hunter Hisky then walked to load the bases with no outs. Carl Schwettmann stepped to the plate and smashed a ball that deflected off Ramirez and bounced into to left field for a two RBI double that put the Bearcats on top for good 2-1. Clint Jack added to the the SBU lead with an RBI sacrifice fly that sent home Hisky. Patrick Latham got in on the act with an RBI single that brought in Schwettmann and extended the Bearcats advantage to 4-1. Noah Tucker capped off the five run frame with an RBI double off the base of the wall in left field.

Morrow continued his dominance on the mound with two scoreless frames in the top of the 7th and 8th inning. In the top of the 9th inning, Morrow surrendered another solo home run that brought the score to 5-2 Bearcats. After Morrow allowed two singles with two outs, Adam White came in from the bullpen to retire the final batter of the game to earn his first save of the season and seal Morrow's 8th win.

With the 8 2/3 innings of 7 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts, Morrow improved his record to 8-1 on the season. At the plate, Schwettmann, Meier, and Tucker all had multiple hits in the ballgame. Schwettmann was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Meier was 2 for 4 with a double and run scored. Tucker went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI. 

SBU will wrap up their series with Washburn in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12:00 PM from Dodson Field.
