Kansas City, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist Baseball team fought back from a three run deficit to force extra innings but could not complete the comeback and ended up falling in 11 innings to Rockhurst by a final score of 10-9. The loss drops SBU's record to 15-25 (9-17 MIAA) on the season.
Rockhurst struck first in the ballgame with two early runs in the bottom of the 1
st inning. In the top of the 2
nd inning, SBU immediately answered back with three runs of their own to go ahead 3-2. The first two runs came from RBI walks to Tyler Mathys and Andrew Meier. Hunter Hisky then put the Bearcats ahead with an RBI single to left field that scored Luke Winfrey.
After Rockhurst went scoreless in the 2
nd inning, they tied the game up with a single run in the bottom of the 3
rd inning. The scoring picked up again in the top of the 5
th inning. Hisky started the inning with a double and came around to score when Carl Schwettmann reached on a fielding error. After Schwettmann moved to 3
rd base on a groundout, Patrick Latham knocked him in with an RBI single to center field that put the Bearcats ahead 5-3. SBU's lead did not last long though as the Hawks proceeded to score five runs in the bottom of the 5
th inning and take an 8-5 advantage.
The SBU offense went back to work in the top of the 6
th inning. With one out, Meier doubled and Hisky followed with a walk. Schwettmann kept the momentum going with an RBI single that scored Meier and trim the deficit to 8-6. Clint Jack followed with a single that loaded the bases. Latham then stepped to the dish and hit an RBI groundout to bring SBU within a run at 8-7.
Rockhurst added a run in the bottom of the 6
th inning to stretch their margin back to two runs at 9-7. In the top of the 7
th inning, Hisky knocked a clutch two-out RBI single to get the Bearcats deficit back to just a run at 9-8. After reliever Quinn Appletoft worked a scoreless 7
th and 8
th inning, the Bearcats were able to tie the game up in the top of the 9
th inning. Tyler Mathys tripled with one out and Meier brought home Mathys with a sacrifice fly. Appletoft threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9
th to send the game into extra innings tied at 9-9.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the 10
th inning but Rockhurst scored a run with two outs in the bottom of the 11
th inning to claim the 10-9 win. Despite being a real bright spot out of the bullpen with threw 4 innings, 3 strikeouts, 1 hit and 1 earned run allowed, Appletoft took the loss (0-1).
At the plate, Meier, Hisky, Mathys, Schwettmann, and Tucker all had multiple hits in the ballgame for the Bearcats. Meier was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI, a run scored and a walk. Hisky was 3 for 5 with a double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, and a walk. Mathys had a 2 for 5 night with a double, triple, RBI, run scored, and walk. Schwettmann was 2 for 6 with a run scored and RBI, and Tucker had a 2 for 5 night with a run scored.
SBU will be back at home on Friday April 20
th to open up a three game series against Washburn University.
