Joplin, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Baseball team bounced from a loss to Missouri Southern Friday night to win game two of the series 6-5. The Bearcats used a four-run 5
th inning and two-run 8
th inning to propel them to the win that improved their record to 14-24 (8-17 MIAA) on the season.
]The game began with two scoreless frames from both starting pitchers. After the SBU offense went down in the top of the 3
rd inning, the Lions drew first blood with a run in the bottom of 3
rd off starter Dalton Morrow to go up 1-0.
Following a scoreless 4
th inning, the SBU offense came to life in the top of the 5
th inning. Trevor Lofstrom tied the game up at 1-1 with a one-out solo homer. With two outs and nobody on, Tyler Mathys and Andrew Meier hit back-to-back singles up the middle. Hunter Hisky capitalized with the runners on base in a huge way with a three-run bomb that put the Bearcats in front 4-1. The home run was Hisky's 10
th of the season. The Lions though immediately trimmed the SBU lead down to just one with a 2 RBI double in the bottom of the 5
th inning. The score stayed at 4-3 heading to the 6
th inning.
Adam White relieved Morrow in the 6
th inning but in the bottom of the 7
th inning, Missouri Southern tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly off White. The game did not remain tied for long as SBU reclaimed the lead on a Patrick Latham sacrifice fly in the top of the 8
th inning that scored Carl Schwettmann. Don Roethler gave the Bearcats some pivotal insurance by blasting the first pitch he saw over the right center field fence.
In the bottom of the 8
th inning, Missouri Southern got within a run at 6-5 by scoring an unearned run off of White. White came back in the bottom of the 9
th inning and slammed the door shut by leaving the tying run stranded on 2
nd base to seal the 6-5 win for SBU.
White earned the win (3-1) after throwing 4.0 innings out of relief with 6 hits, 1 earned run, 5 strikeouts, and no walks. Hisky, Andrew Meier, and Clint Jack all recorded multiple hits on the day. Hisky was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI while Meier was 2 for 5 with a run scored and Jack was 2 for 4. Latham, Roethler, and Lofstrom all had a single hit and RBI in the ballgame.
SBU will play the rubber match of their series against Missouri Southern at 3:00 PM tomorrow afternoon from Warren Turner Field in Joplin.
