Topeka, Kan. – The Southwest Baptist University Softball team fell in a pair of games to the top team in the MIAA conference, the Washburn Ichabods, on Friday afternoon. The 8-0 loss in game one and 4-3 extra innings loss in game two dropped the Bearcats record to 15-30 (5-15 MIAA).
Game 1
Facing a pitcher for Washburn that is undefeated on the season, the SBU offense faced an uphill task in the first game. After two quick outs in the top of the 1
st, Megan Schellert singled to give the Bearcats a base runner. However, she was stranded at 1
st base to end the inning. Schellert's hit would prove to be the lone hit of the ballgame for the Bearcats.
The Ichabods got on the scoreboard and took the early lead with a four run bottom of the 2
nd inning off SBU starting pitcher Alexis Dock. All of the runs were earned. Dock bounced back though with a quick and scoreless bottom of the 3
rd inning.
Washburn tallied another run off Dock in the bottom of the 4
th inning on a double steal. Dock's outing finished after the 4
th inning Hunter Middleton came in to replace her in the 5
th. The Ichabods scored three runs in the bottom of the 5
th to end the game in an 8-0 final.
Dock took the loss (1-5), throwing 4 innings with 4 hits, 5 earned runs, and 4 walks. Washburn's starter, Megan Deiter, improved her record to 16-0 on the season.
Game 2
Despite their offensive struggles in game one, SBU did not let that deter them. Jaidyn Mawhinney started the game with a bunt single. She moved to 2
nd base on a sacrifice bunt from Stormy Greathouse. Schellert then delivered with an RBI single to right center that scored Mawhinney and gave SBU the first lead, 1-0. In the bottom of the 1
st inning though, Washburn tied up the game at 1-1 with an RBI single of their own.
The two teams remained tied until 4
th inning. With Kaylee Schmidli shutting down the Ichabod offense, the Bearcats were to go in front once again with a pair of runs in the top of the 4
th inning. With two outs and runners on 2
nd base and 3
rd base, Mawhinney knocked an RBI single down the left field line that scored Allison Petry. After a pitching change, Greathouse reached on an error that allowed Kelcee Welch to score and give the Bearcats a 3-1 advantage.
Schmidli continued to mow Washburn hitters down in the 4
th and 5
th innings but ran into trouble in the 6
th inning. The Ichabods scored two runs on a single and fielder's choice to knot the ballgame at 3-3. Both teams went down quietly in the 7
th inning, which sent the game into extra innings. Unfortunately, in the bottom of the 8
th inning, the first batter Washburn sent to the plate hit a walkoff solo home run to give them the 4-3 win.
In relief of Claire Miller, Schmidli took the loss but threw 6.2 innings with 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Mawhinney had a perfect game at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a run scored and RBI. Schellert also had 2 hits in 4 tries with an RBI. Payton Wildeman and Jayden Gonzales accounted for the other Bearcat hits.
SBU will return home for their final home games of the season on Monday, April 16
th against the University of Central Oklahoma. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM in Bolivar, Missouri.
