Emporia, Ks. – The Southwest Baptist dropped two heartbreaking, one-run games to the Emporia State Hornets on Thursday afternoon. The Hornets won game one 5-4 and game two 3-2. The Bearcats record falls to 15-28 (5-13 MIAA) on the season and Emporia State improves to 18-28 (8-12 MIAA).
Game 1
SBU started off well with a run in the top of the 1
st to take the early lead. Jaidyn Mawhinney led off with a walk and moved to 2
nd base on a sacrifice bunt and to 3
rd on a passed ball. Megan Schellert took advantage of the runner in scoring position to drive in Mawhinney with a single. In the bottom of the 2
nd inning, Emporia State knotted up the score at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly.
The Bearcats immediately responded with a big top of the 3
rd inning. Stormy Greathouse started the inning with a one-out single to right field. After a fielder's choice and error loaded the bases for SBU, Emily Hall singled an 0-2 pitch to send home Greathouse. Lauren Strobel followed with a 2 RBI single to give SBU a 4-1 lead. Emporia State came right back though with their own three run inning in the bottom of the 3
rd to tie the score once again at 4-4 this time.
Neither team mustered any offense in the 4
th, 5
th, and 6
th innings as both pitchers settled in. For SBU, starting pitcher Alexis Dock finished her outing with a scoreless 4
th inning, and Claire Miller replaced her to pitch the remainder of the game. In the top of the 7
th inning, Greathouse led off with a double to left center. After two outs, Hall singled to advance Greathouse to 3
rd base. However, a fly out ended the scoring chance for SBU. The Hornets would end the game on a two-out walkoff RBI double and claim the 5-4 victory.
Miller, who threw 2.2 innings of the bullpen giving up just the one run on one hit, took the loss (12-14). Hall and Greathouse both had multiple hits in the ballgame. Hall was 3 for 4 with an RBI while Greathouse was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Strobel had one hit and two RBI with Schellert recording a hit and RBI as well.
Game 2
With both starting pitchers, Miller for SBU and Montana Mesler for Emporia State, on point to start the game, neither team had a runner move past 1
st base in the first three innings of action. In the top of the 4
th inning, the Bearcats got their first hit when Jaidyn Mawhinney smacked a leadoff single. Mawhinney then stole 2
nd base and Greathouse walked to put two runners on with no outs. Schellert sacrificed to advance both runners a base. Hall continued her clutch hitting on the day and delivered a 2 RBI single down the left field line to give SBU a 2-0 advantage. Like game one though, Emporia State bounced back to score two runs in the bottom of the 4
th inning and tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the 5
th, SBU loaded the bases with one out but the Hornets pitcher induced a fly out and strikeout to quell the threat. After two scoreless half innings, Emporia State broke the tie and go up 3-2 with a two-out RBI single off Miller. Down to their last chance in the top of the 7
th inning, the Bearcats got a two-out single from Mawhinney but could not bring her around.
Miller took the loss (12-15) despite tossing another complete game with 6 innings, 5 runs, 0 earned runs, and 3 strikeouts. Mawhinney tallied 3 hits in 4 tries in the game and added a run scored. Hall continued her strong day with a 1 for 3 and 2 RBI performance. Jayden Gonzales and Kaley Hansen accounted for the other hits in the ballgame.
SBU will be back in action tomorrow April 13
th for a doubleheader against Washburn at 1:30 PM.
