Bolivar, Mo. – Behind Lauren Storbel's walkoff home run in game 1 and Claire Miller's dominance on the mound, the Bearcats were able to gain a doubleheader split with MIAA conference rival, Pittsburg State on Senior Day. With the split, SBU's record moves to 15-26 (5-11 MIAA) on the season.
Game 1
Following a 1-2-3 top of the 1
st from starting pitcher Claire Miller, the Bearcats got a one out walk from Stormy Greathouse but the Bearcats could not move a runner past 1
st base. Miller allowed her only hit of the game via a leadoff single in the top of 2
nd but worked around the leadoff runner to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the 3
rd, Lauren Strobel singled with one to give SBU its first hit of the ballgame. Strobel was stranded though, and the score remained 0-0.
In the top of the 4
th, Miller escaped a walk and error to leave runners on the corners and keep the Gorillas off the scoreboard. Pittsburg State placed a runner on 3
rd base in the top of the 5
th but catcher Emily Hall picked the runner off to end the threat. After a smooth top of the 6
th from Miller, the Bearcats put runners on 1
st and 2
nd with two outs in a chance to take the lead. However, Payton Wildeman flied out and the game stayed knotted at 0-0.
Neither team threatened in the 7
th inning so the game went to extras. Miller dodged an error and hit by pitch in the top of the 8
th, setting the stage for Lauren Strobel. On a 3-2 pitch, Lauren Strobel blasted a walkoff solo home run over the center field wall to hand SBU the 1-0 victory.
Miller earned her 12
th win (12-12) of the season in complete game shutout fashion. Miller threw 8 innings and struck out 9 Gorilla batters while allowing just 1 hit and 3 walks. Strobel collected 2 hits in 3 at bats and was responsible for the only run of the game.
Game 2
With Miller starting once again, Pittsburg State was able to snap Miller's 21 scoreless inning streak with two runs in the top of the 2
nd. Miller's scoreless inning streak dated back to the doubleheader against Northeastern State on April 5
th. After Miller shut down the Gorillas in the top of the 3
rd and the Bearcats down 2-0, Strobel started the bottom of the 3
rd with an infield single. Strobel was sacrificed over to 2
nd and Greathouse came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to drive home Strobel.
The score stayed 2-1 until the bottom of the 6
th inning in large part to Miller firing three straight shutout innings. In the bottom of the 6
th, the Bearcats used a two-out rally to tie the game at 2-2. Hall doubled to the wall in center field and Morgan McMullin followed with a bloop double that brought home pinch runner Kelcee Welch.
The game would not remain tied for long as the first Gorilla batter in top of the 7
th hit a solo home run off Miller and give Pittsburg State a 3-2 lead. Miller escaped trouble later in the inning to keep the margin at one. Unfortunately, SBU went down in order in their last at bat and Pitt State grabbed the 3-2 win.
Despite taking the loss (12-13), Miller threw another complete game with 7 innings, 8 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Seven different Bearcats all collected a single hit in the ballgame. Greathouse and McMullin tallied RBIs with their hits while Strobel and Welch accounted for the runs.
SBU wiil head out on the road this weekend to take on Emporia State University at 3:00 PM in Emporia, Kansas.
