Box Score Edmond, Ok. - Two three run innings from Central Oklahoma proved to be the difference as they claimed an 8-5 win over Southwest Baptist in game one of the three game set in Edmond . The loss drops SBU's record to 6-12 (1-6 MIAA) while UCO improves to 12-7 (6-1 MIAA).
Central Oklahoma started the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd with a single run off an RBI hit by pitch. In the top of the 3rd, Carl Schwettmann for the Bearcats quickly responded when he launched a solo home run over the center field wall and tie the score at 1. UCO reclaimed a 4-1 lead though in the bottom of the 3rd with three runs off of two home runs.
Another three run inning in the bottom of the 6th and a single run in the 7th for UCO stretched their lead to 8-1. After being quiet most of the game, the Bearcat offense showed some life in the 8th and 9th innings. With two outs in the 8th, Trevor Lofstrom blasted a solo shot to left center to narrow the score to 8-2 Bronchos. In the 9th, Noah Tucker and Hunter Hisky both reached base and were on with two outs when Clint Jack singled to load the bases. Don Roethler and Jackson Mueller followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 8-4 Bronchos. Lofstrom was then hit by a pitch, which forced home another Bearcat run and send the go ahead run to the plate. The SBU rally would fall short as the Bronchos got Luke Winfrey to ground out for the final out of the game.
Jack led the way offensively for the Bearcats in this game with a 3 for 5 day and a run scored. Schwettmann and Roethler both collected 2 hits and an RBI. On the mound, Blake Deatherage took the loss (0-1) going 2.1 innings and allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits. Logan Sorrell and Brandon Hatfield both had scoreless outings on the mound in relief for SBU.
SBU and UCO will square off for game two of the series Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.
