Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Baseball team claimed a series win over Northeastern State Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats came out victorious in an 11-8 slugfest to push their record to 12-19 (6-13 MIAA) on the season.
After starting pitcher Blake Deatherage worked a 1-2-3 top of the 1
st, the Bearcats wasted no time in putting runs up on the board. Tyler Mathys led off with a walk, and Andrew Meier doubled down the left field line to put runners on 2
nd and 3
rd. One batter later Carl Schwettmann hit a towering home run over the wall in left center to give SBU an early 3-0 lead. Clint Jack and Patrick Latham kept the inning going with back-to-back walks. Don Roethler capitalized with the runners on base by blasting a long three run home run of his own to right center and extend the Bearcat advantage to 6-0.
The Bearcat offense kept humming in the bottom of the 2
nd, adding two runs to their tally to increase the score to 8-0. Schwettmann started the attack with a single and then advanced to third on a single from Jack. With Latham up to bat, Jack stole 2
nd and an errant from the Northeastern State catcher allowed Schwettmann to cross home. Jack moved to 3
rd on a wild pitch and a Latham single chased him home.
In the top of the 3
rd, the Riverhawks cut the SBU lead in half through scoring four two-out runs on four hits and two Bearcat errors. The four runs chased Deatherage from the game. Northeastern State added another run in the top of the 4
th to close the gap to 8-5. NSU added two more in the 5
th to trim their deficit to just 8-7.
The bottom of the 6
th the Bearcats stemmed the Riverhawks momentum by scoring two runs. With one out, Hunter Hisky and Carl Schwettmann stroked back-to-back singles. Clint Jack kept the train rolling with an RBI single that sent Hisky home and Schwettmann to 3
rd. Latham knocked in Schwettmann with a sacrifice fly to make the score 10-7 Bearcats.
Both teams traded runs in the 8
th with SBU's run coming on a solo home run from Meier. Meier's home run was the third on the day for the Bearcats. Drew Wagner pitched the final two innings out of the bullpen to earn the save and seal the 11-8 Bearcats win. Adam White picked up his 2
nd win of the season out of relief.
Schwettmann, Meier, Roethler, and Jack paced the 11 run offensive attack for SBU. Schwettmann had his best game of the season with 4 hits in 5 at bats including two extra base hits, 3 runs and 3 RBI. In his third game back from injury, Meier went 2 for 5 with a run scored and RBI. Roethler had a 2 for 4 day with 3 RBI and a run scored. Lastly, Jack was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
SBU will be back at home on Wednesday, April 4
th at 2:00 PM when they host Drury for the annual Highway 13 Catfight.
