Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. – In a MIAA Conference home doubleheader, the Southwest Baptist University Softball dropped both to Missouri Southern by 4-1 and 8-2 scores. The two losses drop SBU's record to 12-19 (2-6 MIAA) and Missouri Southern improves to 16-20 (3-7 MIAA).
Game 1 Recap
The Lions were the first to strike with a run in the top of the 1st off a sacrifice fly. The Bearcats immediately tied the game up in the bottom of the 1st with a sacrifice fly of their own off the bat of Megan Schellert.
Missouri Southern reclaimed the lead in the top of the 2
nd by scoring a run via an SBU error. The Lions maintained their one run lead until the top of the 5
th. In the 5
th, the Lions added two runs to extend their advantage to the final margin of 4-1. The Bearcats threatened in the bottom of the 6
th by putting runners on 1
st and 2
nd with back-to-back singles. However, a popup to end the inning extinguished the scoring chance for SBU.
Claire Miller pitched the whole game but still took the loss (9-9). Miller allowed only one earned run on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts. At the plate, designated player Miranda Aguiliar put together a 2 for 3 performance while Jaidyn Mawhinney had a hit, run, and walk.
Game 2 Recap
In game two of the doubleheader, the Lions jumped in front first once again with a three run top of the 2
nd off starting pitcher Kaylee Schmidli. In the 3
rd, Missouri Southern padded their lead with two unearned runs via an SBU error, which made it a 5-0 Lion advantage.
The Bearcats closed the gap in the bottom of the 3
rd with an RBI double from Schellert that sent home Mawhinney. This made the score 5-1, but the Lions quickly added another run in the top of the 4
th to stretch their lead to 6-1.
In the bottom of the 4
th, Payton Wildeman started the inning with a double down the left field line. Jayden Gonzales then followed with a walk. After a flyout, Kori Hillenburg walked to load the bases for the Bearcats. Following a fielder's choice, senior shortstop Stormy Greathouse drew an RBI walk to make the score 6-2. The Lions were able to get out of the jam from there by getting Schellert to pop up on the infield.
Missouri Southern tacked on a single run in the 6
th and 7
th, which made the final score 8-2 Lions. Kaylee Schmidli (0-2) was saddled with the loss after throwing 3 innings and allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 3 walks. Wildeman had a perfect day in the box, going 3 for 3 with one double and two singles.
SBU will be home on Friday, March 30
th for a doubleheader against Northwest Missouri State starting at 2:00 PM.
