Bolivar, Mo. - SBU Baseball drops the first game in the series to Fort Hays State University 7-5 in extra innings.
In the top of the first inning, Fort Hays managed to hit a 3 run homer to take the lead. Tyler Mathys scored the first run for the Bearcats on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Hisky. The Tigers scored another run in the top of the second and made the score 4-1. Luke Winfrey struck back and batted in another run for the Bearcats in the bottom of the second.
Going to the top of the third, the Tigers hit another solo home run in the left field to make the score 5-2. In the bottom of the third, SBU managed to get closer to the score and scored two runs by Carl Schwettmann and Clint Jack.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bearcats tied up the score by Mathys stealing home. As the game continued, the score stayed 5-5 and both teams stayed locked in a battle that lasted into extra innings.
In the top of the eleventh, Fort Hays scored two runs and the Bearcats couldn't catch up in the bottom in the eleventh.
SBU Baseball will be back in action for Game 2 on Saturday, March 24th at 2PM.
