Box Score 2 Liberty, Mo. – The Bearcats were on the road Friday against William Jewell College. Game one was taken by SBU with a final score of 3-0. The win gave head coach,
Jim Flora, his 100
th career win as a Bearcat. William Jewell got their bats going in game two, run-ruling the Bearcats 8-0 in five innings. Overall, Southwest Baptist moves to 4-11 (0-0 MIAA) on the season.
Game 1 Recap
The Cardinals got the action going in the bottom of the second inning with a one out single followed by a one out double, but the defense did their job and got two outs to prevent any runs from scoring. In the third, Miranda Aguiliar got on base with a single to the left side. Kaley Hansen then hit a single to the right side, sending the baserunner to third. Unfortunately, both runners were stranded on base at the end of the third.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Bearcats put up two runs in the fifth. A leadoff double from Payton Wildeman gave a spark to the offense. Emily Hall followed with a single, advancing Wildeman over to third. William Jewell then got two quick strikeouts, but an RBI single from Jaidyn Mawhinney gave SBU a 1-0 lead. An error by the second baseman allowed another run to score before the fifth inning ended.
The sixth inning was fueled with hits again from Wildeman, Hall, and an RBI single from Jayden Gonzales, putting the Bearcats up 3-0 in the sixth. The Cardinals got one baserunner in the sixth due to a two out walk, but Claire Miller struck out the next batter, sending the game into the last inning. SBU did their job in the bottom of the seventh, getting three consecutive outs to end the game.
Claire Miller pitched all seven innings, giving up only two hits and striking out eight in the win. Her record moves to 2-6 on the season. Payton Wildeman and Emily Hall led the Bearcats offensively, both collecting two hits. Coach Flora gathered his 100
th career win in just his fifth season at SBU.
Game 2 Recap
First inning hits by Greathouse and Schellert got the Bearcats off to a good start, but neither were able to make it home. Hunter Middleton started on the mound for the Bearcats in game two. Due to aggressive William Jewell base running in the first, the Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead from a wild pitch.
After a scoreless second inning, William Jewell tacked on six more runs in the third giving them a 7-0 lead. Megan Schellert reached in the fourth with a leadoff single. She advanced to second thanks to a single from Emily Hall, but both were stranded there. The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning. SBU got one out at home from a fielder's choice and a second out from a line drive to the left fielder, but a run scored after the runner on third tagged up on the line drive. That run gave William Jewell an 8-0 win due to the run rule.
The Bearcats had hits from Greathouse, Schellert (2), Hall, and Gonzales. SBU defense was strong, recording zero errors in game two.
The softball team will travel to Rolla, MO on Saturday to take on Missouri S&T in a double header at 1:00 and 3:00.
