Missouri Western Spoils Morrow's Solid Outing

3/18/2018 3:57:00 PM

Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - Sophomore starting pitcher Dalton Morrow went deep into the game for Southwest Baptist but the SBU bats struggled to string anything together. Missouri Western came with 6-1 win and a series sweep over SBU. Missouri Western's record improves to 13-9 (6-3 MIAA) while SBU's drops to 8-16 (2-10 MIAA).

After no runs in the first two innings of action, Missouri Western claimed an early 2-0 lead with two separate RBI singles off Morrow. In the top of the 4th, the Griffons extended their advantage to 4-0 with two more runs on a two run homer. Morrow was solid the rest of the way, shutting out the Griffons in the 5th, 6th, and 7th.

Despite Morrow throwing up all zero's after the 4th inning, the SBU offense could not push any runs across against the Griffons pitching staff until the 7th inning. Still down 4-0, Noah Tucker and Patrick Latham started the bottom of the 7th with back-to-back singles. Both later advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a throwing error from the Missouri Western pitcher. After a strikeout, Jackson Mueller hit a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Tucker, which proved to be the lone run of the game for the Bearcats.

The Griffons extended their margin to 6-1 with two runs in the top of the 9th. The Bearcats put together a rally in the bottom of the 9th as Tucker and Latham both singled again and Trevor Lofstrom reached on an error to load the bases. However, Mueller grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game and hand the Griffons the 6-1 victory.

Morrow took the loss (4-1) despite tossing 7 innings with 5 strikeouts and 8 hits and 4 earned runs allowed. Preston Bailey picked up the win (1-1) while Kellan Richards threw the final two innings for the Griffons and earned the save (2). At the dish for SBU, Tucker and Latham were both 2 for 4 on the day. Carl Schwettmann and Tyler Mathys picked up the remaining two hits on the day for the Bearcats.

SBU will be back in action on Friday, March 23rd at 2:00 PM when they begin a home series with Fort Hays State.
