Box Score Bolivar, Mo. – After 9 innings the two teams were tied 4-4 but the Missouri Western State Griffons were able to scratch across two runs in the top of the 10
th to win 6-4 and claim the series victory over Southwest Baptist.
SBU pushed the first run of the game across in the bottom of the 1
st. Tyler Mathys led the inning off with a single and later moved to second on a wild pitch. Hunter Hisky moved Mathys to third with a ground ball. Carl Schwettmann followed with an RBI single up the middle to help SBU grab an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the 2
nd, the Griffons answered with a run to knot the score at 1-1.
SBU's offense got rolling again in the bottom of the 3
rd. Mathys started the inning with a single and Hisky followed with a walk, putting runners on 2
nd and 1
st with nobody out. After a fielder's choice, Clint Jack doubled to right center, scoring Hisky and giving SBU a 2-1 lead. SBU's next batter, Don Roethler, drove in Schwettmann with an RBI groundout to make the score 3-1 Bearcats. Noah Tucker capped the inning with an RBI single that sent home Jack and extended SBU's margin to 4-1. In the top of the 4
th though, Missouri Western responded with a three run inning that tied the score once again. The Griffons scored their three runs via two RBI walks and an RBI single.
With both pitching staffs stiffening, the two squads remained deadlocked at 4-4 for the next five innings. SBU had a chance in the bottom of the 9
th to win it with runners on 2
nd and 1
st. However, the Griffons center fielder chased down a Mathys line drive in the left center field gap to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10
th, Missouri Western pulled ahead with two runs on an RBI single and a wild pitch that sent a runner home from 3
rd. In the bottom of the 10
th, Schwettmann reached on a dropped fly ball and later advanced to 2
nd. The next two batters though for the Bearcats flied out to end the game.
Out of relief, Mitchell Stemerdink took the loss for SBU (1-2), giving up 2 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings of work. Levi Abrahamson received the win (1-0) and Kellen Richardson earned the save (1).
At the plate for SBU, Mathys was the only Bearcat with multiple hits as he went 2 for 5 with a run scored. With the two hits, Mathys upped his average on the season to .370. Schwettmann, Jack, and Tucker all had a hit and an RBI as well.
Southwest Baptist and Missouri Western will wrap up their three game series Sunday afternoon.
