Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Lebanon, IL. - Despite dropping game 1 of the doubleheader 6-1, the Southwest Baptist Softball team bounced back to claim a 1-0 win in game 2 of the twin bill. After the doubleheader,
SBU's record now stands at 10-13 (1-1), and
McKendree's is 15-6.
Game 1 Recap
McKendree wasted no time in scoring runs off of SBU starting pitcher Claire Miller. The first six batters reached base safely, which resulted in four runs and Miller's departure. McKendree added two more runs in the inning with reliever Kaylee Schmidli pitching. All six runs for McKendree in the 1
st were charged to Miller.
SBU got on the scoreboard in the top of the 3
rd. Kaley Hansen led off with a single, and Jaidyn Mawhinney followed with a walk. A batter later, Megan Schellert hit an RBI single that brought in Hansen. A Payton Wildeman walk loaded the bases with one out, but SBU was unable to add any more runs.
The 3
rd was the last of the scoring for either team as McKendree's starter and Schmidli shut down the bats. SBU went quietly in the top of the 7
th and McKendree claimed the 7-1 win. Schmidli was superb in relief, tossing 6 shutout innings and allowing only 2 hits. At the plate, Hansen, Mawhinney, Schellert, Wildeman, and Jayden Gonzales accounted for the 5 SBU hits in the game. Miller took the loss (6-7), which snapped her streak of five consecutive starts with a win.
Game 2 Recap
SBU wasted no time scoring in this game as Mawhinney led off with a single and later advanced to second on a groundball and to third on a passed ball. Schellert then drove in Mawhinney on a groundball and hand SBU the decisive 1-0 lead.
After a tough start in game 1, Miller found her groove once again in game 2. Miller did not allow a hit until the bottom of the 4
th. The bottom of the 4
th was the only scoring chance for McKendree as they had their runner reach 3
rd base with two outs. However, Miller stranded that runner with a strike out looking. Miller was dominant the rest of the way, retiring McKendree in order in the 5
th, 6
th, and 7
th.
Miller threw her 11
th complete game and 4
th shutout of the season with a 1 hitter in 7 innings. She also added 8 strikeouts and walked just 2. At the plate, Mawhinney went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Emily Hall had the only other SBU hit as she went 1 for 3.
SBU will be back in action at home on March 21
st for a doubleheader against Newman University.
