Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist Softball Team swept the Rockhurst Hawklets Wednesday afternoon with 3-2 and 7-2 wins. The two wins improve their record to 9-12 (1-1) this season while Rockhurst drops to 7-14.
Game 1 Recap
After three shutdown innings from starting pitcher Claire Miller, the Bearcats broke through with the first run of the game in the bottom of the 3
rd inning. With two outs and a runner on, Jaidyn Mawhinney dropped a sweet bunt single that allowed Morgan McMullin to advance to third base. Stormy Greathouse immediately followed with an RBI single down the right field line to bring in McMullin.
Miller then had an easy top of the 4
th and 5
th inning before encountering some trouble in the 6
th. Still down 1-0, Rockhurst used a leadoff walk and then a double to right center off Miller to tie the score at 1-1. Two batters later Rockhurst took a 2-1 lead when their runner on 3
rd scored on a passed ball. Miller limited the damage from there to keep SBU in the game.
In the bottom of the 6
th, the Bearcats fought back and regained the lead 3-2 by capitalizing on a Rockhurst mistake and coming through with a clutch hit. A throwing error from the Rockhurst shortstop allowed Mawhinney to score and knot the game at 2-2. Emily Hall then hit a huge 2 out RBI single to give SBU the 3-2 advantage. Miller shutdown the Hawklets in the top of the 7
th behind two strikeouts in the inning and hand SBU its 8
th win of the year.
Miller tossed her 9
th complete game of the season and earned her fifth consecutive win to bring her record on the season to 6-6. Miller threw 7 innings with 10 strikeouts, 1 earned run, 4 hits, and 5 walks. In the batter's box, Mawhinney finished with 2 hits and a run scored while Greathouse, Hall, Payton Wildeman, and Miranda Aguiliar all collected one hit a piece. Hall and Greathouse added RBIs while Wildeman had a run scored.
Game 2 Recap
The second game of the doubleheader began with Rockhurst jumping in front 2-0. The Hawklets tallied single runs in the 1
st and 3
rd off SBU starter Hunter Middleton. These would be the only runs the Hawklets scored all game as Alexis Dock and Miller combined to throw 5 shutout frames the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the 3
rd, the SBU bats came alive with a huge four run inning. Jayden Gonzales started the scoring by blasting a two run homer over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2. Kori Hillenburg followed with a single and Mawhinney reached on error, setting Greathouse up to drive in Hillenburg for what proved to be the winning. Wildeman's RBI with runners on 2
nd and 3
rd extended the SBU lead to 4-2.
The offense for both teams was quiet until the bottom of the 6
th. The Bearcats tacked on three more runs on a Miranda Aguiliar RBI single and a perfectly executed squeeze play that brought home Hall and Yezzania Gonzalez to make the score 7-2.
Dock earned the win by throwing 4 shutout innings out of the bullpen. Dock allowed just one hit, walked none, and struck out 3. Wildeman and Aguiliar both were 2 for 3 in the game with an RBI. Gonzales finished 1 for 2 with 3 RBI and a run scored out of the 8
th spot in the lineup.
Southwest Baptist will travel to McKendree University tomorrow for a doubleheader that begins at 1:00 PM.
