Dominant Pitching and Offensive Explosion Carries SBU Baseball to 14-1 Win

Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist Baseball Team rode dominant pitching and 13 hits to a 14-1 win over Truman State Tuesday afternoon. The win improves the Bearcat record to 8-13 (2-7 MIAA), and the loss drops the Bulldogs to 4-12 (0-0 GLVC).

SBU got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd when Tyler Mathys scored on a wild pitch. SBU then added single runs in the bottom of the 3rd and bottom of the 4th. In the 3rd, Luke Winfrey walked with the bases loaded to bring home Carl Schwettmann. In the 4th, SBU took advantage of a Bulldog miscue on a pickoff to score Mathys again.

The Bearcats kept humming on offense in the 5th with a five run inning to stretch the score to 8-0. With two runners on the corners, Noah Tucker smashed a double over the center fielder's head to drive in Jackson Mueller and Winfrey. After Mathys walked, Hunter Hisky crushed a three run home run over the fence in right field. 

In the top of the 6th, starter Elias Czech capped off his six scoreless and no hit innings by getting out of a two runners on with one out jam. The bottom of 7th saw the Bearcats add two more to the scoreboard and extend to a 10-0 lead with a Schwettmann two run homer that drove in Hisky.  

SBU added four more in the bottom of the 8th that included a 2 RBI single from Patrick Latham and RBI double from Jordan Stevens. In the top of the 9th, Truman State scored their lone run of the game, which ended the Bearcat pitchers 17 inning scoreless streak. Czech earned his first win of the season with his six shutout innings allowing no hits and striking out 9. Blake Bagenstos was saddled with the loss for Truman State.

At the plate, the Bearcats had standout performances from Mathys, Hisky, and Winfrey. Mathys posted a 2 for 3 day with 3 runs scored and 3 walks. Hisky was 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs, and Winfrey collected 2 hits, 3 runs, an RBI, and 2 walks.

SBU will continue their home stand with a three game series against Missouri Western beginning on Friday, March 16th.
