Bolivar, Mo. - With the wind blowing out, the Southwest Baptist Baseball team took full advantage as they scored 29 total runs in a doubleheader sweep over East Central Saturday afternoon. Sweeping the two games gave SBU the series win over the Tigers. By claiming three of the four games this weekend, the Bearcat Baseball team has now won their opening series for the third straight year. With the 29 runs, SBU scored a whopping 54 total runs in the series.
Game 1 Recap
East Central was the first to strike as they plated three runs in the top of the 2nd. SBU got a run back in the bottom half when Don Roethler launched a ball into orbit over the right field fence. Roethler struck again in the bottom half of the third with a two out, three RBI triple down the right field line to hand SBU a 4-3 lead. Tyler Mathys then drove in Roether with a single to make it 5-3 Bearcats. East Central got a run back in the top of the 4th.
The bottom of the 5th the Bearcat offense exploded for their biggest inning of the series. SBU scored 11 runs to make the score 16-5. The 11 run inning was highlighted by back-to-back long home runs by Carl Schwettmann and Roethler and 2 RBI double from Hunter Hisky. The Tigers responded with four runs in the top half of the 6th but SBU scored two more in the bottom half, which made the final score 18-8.
Starting pitcher Andrew Meier earned his first win of the season. Roethler finished 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, a triple, 4 runs scored, and 5 RBI. Schweetmann pounded 2 home runs of his own on a 2 for 5 game with 4 RBI. Hisky finished 2 for 4 with 3 runs and 2 RBI.
Game 2 Recap
Game two of the day started similar to game one in that East Central jumped out to the early lead. The Tigers scored two unearned runs off starter Dalton Morrow to claim an early 2-0 lead. That lead did not last long as Clint Jack roped a triple to start the bottom of the 1st and later scored on a wild pitch. Then Hisky smacked his first home run over the wall in right in the bottom of the 1st. The two run home run gave SBU a 3-2 advantage that SBU grew from there.
The Bearcats added four runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a two RBI single from Meier and an RBI double from Hisky. At the end of the 2nd inning, the score was 7-2 Bearcats. East Central hit a solo home run in the 3rd to draw them within four runs. However, in the 5th, Roethler hit an RBI double to drive in Schwettman and Mathys drove in Roethler with a single to make it 9-3 SBU. The Bearcats plated two more runs before cruising to a 11-4 win.
Starter Dalton Morrow got his first win of the season with five strong innings of four strike out, one earned ball. Hisky went 3 for 5 with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored in the game, and Meier was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
Southwest Baptist will be back on the diamond Friday, February 9th when they travel to Kingsville, Texas for a four game series against Texas A&M Kingsville. First pitch of game one of the series is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
