Bearcats Win Two out of Three on Saturday

St. Cloud, Mn. - Southwest Baptist University played three games on Saturday in Minnesota. They began the day with an early double header against the University of Sioux Falls South Dakota. Starting the day strong, the Bearcats fought hard and received two wins against Sioux Falls. Game one finished with a final score of 2-1 and game two finished 1-0, improving SBU's record to 3-8 (0-0 MIAA) on the season. The Bearcats then took on St. Cloud State University early Saturday afternoon and lost in an offensive battle 11-9, taking their record to 3-9 (0-0 MIAA). 

Game 1 Recap
The Bearcats scored their runs early, both of them coming in the second inning. Payton Wildeman kept the inning alive with a two out single and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Miranda Aguiliar followed with a single to score Wildeman, giving SBU a 1-0 lead. Their second run came from an RBI single by Emily Hall. Southwest Baptist played great defense, holding Sioux Falls to one run. Hunter Middleton chalked up her second win of the year, improving her record to 2-1. She pitched 5.2 innings, giving up only one run (earned), walking three, and striking out two. 

Game 2 Recap
Stormy Greathouse started the game with a leadoff single and moved over to second with a stolen base, but couldn't get driven home. The Bearcats got something going in the third inning from a Kori Hillenburg double to center field, but was stranded at third when the inning ended. In the fourth inning the Cougars had a chance to score on a single to left field, but Payton Wildeman threw out the Cougar baserunner at home for the third out of the inning. 

SBU and USF were tied 0-0 at the end of seven innings, taking the game into extra innings. Based on the international tiebreaker rules, SBU began the eighth inning with a runner on second base. A sacrifice bunt moved Emily Hall over to third with only one out in the inning. Kaley Hansen drove in Hall with a single to right field to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. The Cougars also began the eighth inning with a runner on second and successfully moved her over to third with a sacrifice bunt as well. The next two batters popped out to the second baseman and grounded to the second baseman respectively, securing another victory for SBU with a final score of 1-0. 

Megan Schellert collected two hits in the win. Hillenburg, Greathouse, and Strobel each recorded a stolen base. Claire Miller collected her first win on the season pitching an eight inning shutout, giving up just four hits, and striking out nine batters.  

Game 3 Recap
SBU managed to score a run in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Lauren Strobel, but St. Cloud State University answered back with three of their own in the bottom half of the first. The Bearcats were able to take a 6-3 lead from a strong five run third inning. Payton Wildeman hit a two run homerun, Emily Hall drove in a run with an RBI single, Kori Hillenburg hit an RBI double, and two more runs scored on an error by the right fielder. SCSU responded with two runs of their own, making the score 6-5 SBU at the end of the third inning. 

The Bearcats got three more runs from another Payton Wildeman homerun in the fourth inning, giving the Bearcats a 9-5 lead. St. Cloud scored one run in the fourth and five in the fifth to take an 11-9 lead in the fifth inning. Aguiliar doubled with two outs in the sixth, but was stranded there. Emily Hall got her third hit of the game leading off the seventh, but they couldn't score her leading to a final score of 11-9 in favor of St. Cloud. 

Payton Wildeman led the Bearcats offensively going 2 for 4 with two homeruns and five RBIs. Emily Hall collected three hits in the game, and Lauren Strobel finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. 

Southwest Baptist University will wrap up their trip to Minnesota with a morning game on Sunday against Minnesota State University - Mankato.
