St. Cloud, Mn. - The SBU softball team traveled up to St. Cloud, Minnesota for a five game tournament this weekend. Friday evening the girls played Augustana University from South Dakota and lost by a score of 8-0. The loss puts the Bearcats at 1-8 (0-0) MIAA for the season.
Senior Jaidyn Mawhinney started the game with a leadoff walk, but SBU couldn't get any runs on the board. Augustana University scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first. Two of those runs came from a two out, two RBI double, and another from a two out, one RBI single. The Vikings put another run on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to left field. In the third inning Jaidyn Mawhinney was hit by a pitch and Kori Hillenburg took over for her. The Bearcats kept Augustana University quiet until a one out, two RBI triple in the sixth inning. The Vikings went up 8-0 and the game was called due to the run rule.
Claire Miller started the game for the Bearcats and went 3.1 innings giving up 6 runs (4 earned), 4 hits, 4 walks, and struck out 3 in the loss. SBU had a total of five baserunners, Mawhinney, Greathouse, and Wildeman all receiving walks. The lone hit was a single to center field from freshman catcher Nicole Horstman.
Softball will be back in action with three games on Saturday. They will play two morning games and one early afternoon game. SBU will wrap up the tournament with one game Sunday morning
