Hays, Ks. - Southwest Baptist University scores 54 points in the second half and overtime period, but it was not enough as the Bearcats fall to Fort Hays State, 98-95. With the loss the Bearcats record goes to 15-12 (7-11 MIAA) and Fort Hays goes to 23-5 (14-5 MIAA).
The Bearcats were lead by Caylee Richardson who scored 27 points and grabbing six rebounds. Megan Rosenbohm also chipped in 23 points while pulling down seven rebounds, dishing out four assists, and five steals. As a team the Bearcats shot 45.9% (34-74) from the field and 42.9% (9-21) from the three point line.
In the first quarter SBU found themselves on the wrong side of a 13-0 run, the Bearcats first points were scored by Richardson at the 4:54 mark in the first. SBU would start to chip away at that lead, which was led by Bailey Rezabek who scored eight points in the quarter, and after the end of the first quarter SBU was down 18-23. The second quarter saw both the Tigers and the Bearcats trade baskets, until a layup by Rezabek cut the Hays lead to five with one minute left in the first half. Hays would hit one more shot before the half and the Bearcats found themselves down 41-48 heading into halftime.
Starting the third quarter, SBU took a 52-50 lead with 8:42 in the third quarter after a three point basket from Sydney Bandy. During the remainder of the third quarter SBU and Fort Hays would exchange the lead five different times, and at the end of the third quarter SBU found themselves down one 73-74. The fourth quarter saw Hays build on their one point lead up to four, but a and-one layup from Morgan Henderson with 9:32 left cut the Hays lead to one 76-77. After the made free throw SBU would then go on a 7-0 run and built a 83-77 lead with 7:13 left in the game. Hays would not give up as they cut the Bearcats lead down to one with 4:39 left in the game. From this point of the remainder of the game SBU and Hays would exchange layups and free throws, until SBU had a chance to win the game in regulation with one second left but the shot fell short and the game would go to overtime.
In overtime, the Bearcats would score on one of two free throws to start overtime. SBU would get within one with thirty seconds remaining, but the Tigers would hit 2-4 free throws and would come away with a three point win 95-98.
SBU will be back in action Friday, February 23 as they travel to Kearney, Nebraska as they are to take on the Loopers of Nebraska-Kearney. The tip off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
