Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist Baseball Team played a home doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Rockhurst University and came away victorious in both. SBU won game one by a score of 14-5 and game two by a score of 8-7. The two wins today gave the Bearcats the series win over the Hawks and improved their record to 5-6 (0-0 MIAA) on the year. The Hawks dropped to 1-2 (0-0 GLVC). Southwest Baptist will take the diamond again on Friday when they open MIAA conference play as they host Nebraska Kearney.
Game 1 Recap
After starting pitcher Andrew Meier threw a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Bearcats quickly claimed the early advantage on a Hunter Hisky RBI single. Two batters later, Trevor Lofstrom lifted a deep sacrifice fly to left that brought home Meier to make it 2-0 SBU after an inning.
Neither team scored until the top of the 4th when Rockhurst had an RBI single to bring them closer. In the bottom half of the 4th though, SBU got that run back plus another. With two outs in the inning, Jackson Mueller lined a single to center field that plated Clint Jack. Mueller was hustling out of the box and capitalized on a bobble by the Rockhurst center fielder to put himself in scoring position at second base. That hustle paid off because after a walk to Carl Schwettman, Tyler Mathys singled to center to drive home Mueller.
In the top of the 5th, Rockhurst loaded the bases with two outs and then hit a grand slam down the left field line that put them on top 5-4. The bottom of the 6th inning is when the Bearcats would respond in a big way. Mathys doubled down the right field line to tie the game up at 5. Meier then singled home Mathys and Schwettmann, which put SBU ahead for good. The Bearcats would go on to score seven more runs and end any hope for a Rockhurst comeback. In the 6th inning, SBU sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs.
On the mound, Mitchell Stemerdink got his first win in Bearcat uniform as he pitched a scoreless final two innings that included 2 strikeouts. Meier ended up throwing 5 innings of one earned ball, allowing 6 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4. At the plate, Hisky was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and a run scored in the game. Lofstrom was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Mathys was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Then Carl Schwettmann was 1 for 2 with a home run, 3 RBI, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored out of the 9 hole.
Game 2 Recap
In the second game of the day, SBU started fast once again with Don Roethler driving home Hisky with a two out RBI single to center field. The two teams both put up zeros in the 2nd but Rockhurst tacked on three runs in the 3rd to make the score 3-1 Hawks.
In the bottom of the 4th, the Bearcats would have a three run inning of their own. Patrick Latham led off with a single and then Mueller blasted a deep two home run to left field to knot the game at 3-3. SBU's next batter, Schwettmann, walked and proceeded to steal second. He was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Mathys. Meier did his job by driving home Schwettman with an RBI double to give the lead back to SBU, 4-3.
After a scoreless 5th, SBU added insurance in the bottom of the 6th by erupting for a four run inning. Mathys continued his great day at the plate with a solo home run to left to extend SBU's lead to 5-3. Meier and Hisky followed with back-to-back singles to set up runners at the corners. Back to back hit by pitches allowed SBU to plate their 6th run of the game. The bases were still loaded for Jack, who smacked a 2 RBI single to right field to push the margin to 8-3 Bearcats.
SBU needed all the runs they got in the 6th as Rockhurst came back with 4 runs in the top of the 7th. The Hawks had the tying run at 2nd with two outs but freshman Logan Sorrell slammed the door shut by striking out Rockhurst's final batter and give SBU the 8-7 win.
Dalton Morrow got his second win of the season by pitching 6 1/3 innings in which he struck out 9, walked 1, and allowed 4 earned runs on 8 hits. Sorrell got his first save of the season with recording the final two outs of the game. At the dish, Meier was 3 for 4 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Hisky was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored, and Jack was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
