Bolivar, Mo. - After a delayed start due to weather, the Southwest Baptist Baseball Team lost to Rockhurst 10-7 in the opening game of a three game series. Carter Newton (0-2) took the loss while Brock Collins (1-0) picked up the win out of relief for the Hawks.
Rockhurst struck first with three runs in the top of the 1st. They added two more runs in the 2nd to go up 5-0. SBU got a run back in the bottom of the 2nd when Tyler Mathys came home on a Clint Jack ground ball. After a Hawks run in the 3rd to make the score 6-1, the Bearcats responded with five runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 6. SBU got RBI singles from Mathys, Trevor Lofstrom, and Jack in the inning. Rockhurst quickly claimed the lead back in the top of the 4th on a 2 RBI double. The next four and a half innings no runs were pushed across as both pitching staffs settled in. In the top of the 9th, the Hawks got some insurance by plating two more runs. SBU would score a run in the bottom of the 9th before falling 10-7.
The Bearcats offensive punch from the game centered around four guys. Lofstrom reached base all five plate appearances for the Bearcats as he was 4 for 4 with a hit by pitch. He added 2 RBI and a run scored as well. Mathys was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Don Roethler went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Then Jack was 1 for 4 with 3 RBI on the day. Cory Dudley was strong out of relief for the Bearcats as he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit in the process.
Southwest Baptist will finish their three game series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 PM from Dodson Field.
