Bolivar, Mo. - Megan Rosenbohm, Ray'Shionne Smith, and Caylee Richardson combined for 54 of the Bearcats 80 points on the night to avenge a loss to the Riverhawks of Northeastern State earlier in the season. The win moves Southwest Baptist's record to 13-8 (5-7 MIAA) while Northeastern State goes to 9-10 (5-7 MIAA).
Megan Rosenbohm had her 11th 20+ point performance of the season with 25 tonight to go along with pulling down a career high 9 rebounds. Rosenbohm did most of her damage at the foul line, converting 13 of her 14 free throws (92.8%). Smith added 16 points on an efficient 55.6% (5-9) shooting from the floor and dished 3 assists as well. Richardson dropped in 13 points and 10 rebounds, making it her 5th double double of the season. For the night, Southwest Baptist shot 40.0% (22-55) on field goals, 42.9% (9-21) on three balls, and 87.1% (27-31) on foul shots. The Bearcats held the Riverhawks to 39.4% (28-71) shooting and a cold 30.0% (9-30) from deep. Northeastern State held the slight rebounding edge in the game, grabbing 46 boards while SBU corralled 40.
SBU took control early as they exploded for a 14-0 run in the middle of the first quarter. Laura Vierkant finished off the run with a three that helped SBU gain a 18-10 advantage at the end of the first. Shortly into the second quarter, Richardson nailed a triple of her own to give SBU a 13 point lead, 29-16. The closest Northeastern State got the rest of the quarter was within nine points but a Rosenbohm free throw stretched the Bearcat lead back to 14, which was the largest of the half. The Riverhawks added a bucket to make it 39-27 at halftime.
With 4:03 left in the third quarter, Northeastern State cut their deficit to six points, 45-39. The last four minutes of the quarter though SBU blitzed the Riverhawks, outscoring them 17-8 to take a 62-47 advantage into the fourth and final period. The first basket of the fourth quarter, a jumper from Rosenbohm, handed SBU a 17 point lead, which was their largest of the game. Slowly but surely Northeastern State chipped away at the deficit and cut it all the way down to five with 1:58 remaining. Over the next minute, Rosenbohm and Smith took over as they combined to go 6 for 6 at the foul line to ice the game and make the Bearcats victorious, 80-74.
Southwest Baptist will be back at home on Saturday, February 3rd when they host #21 Central Oklahoma. Tip is set for 1:30 PM in the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
