Poor Second Half Dooms Southwest Baptist in Loss to Northeastern State

Bolivar, Mo. - Despite holding a 40-33 halftime advantage, Southwest Baptist was outscored by Northeastern State 45-31 in the second half and 29-13 in the final eight minutes before falling 78-71 to the Riverhawks. The loss drops SBU's record to 11-10 (5-7 MIAA) and the win improves NSU's to 7-14 (3-9 MIAA).

SBU was led in scoring by both Logan Hovey and Kai Woodfall, who each scored 17 points on the night. Hovey shot 50.0% (6-12) from the floor and 25.0% (1-4) from three while grabbing 9 rebounds. Woodfall was 62.5% (5-8) from the field including five made threes. Damian Prgomet added his fourth double double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Prgomet is now tied for the team lead in double doubles with Hovey. Marlon Alcindor was the only other Bearcat to notch double figures in the game with 10 points. Overall, Southwest Baptist made 46.2% (24-52) of their field goals, 33.3% (8-24) of their long balls, and 62.5% (15-24) of their foul attempts. SBU had the edge on the glass once again, outrebounding the Riverhawks 45-31 in the contest. The Bearcats did turn the ball over 22 times and only forced 11 Riverhawk turnovers. 

From the opening tap of the first half, SBU took control and led for the entirety of the first half. On a layup from Darnell Latham Jr. with 12:38 left, SBU built an early 15-8 advantage. Four minutes later, NSU had trimmed their deficit down to just two but the Bearcats responded with a 12-0 spurt to push their lead back out to 30-18. On two free throws from Hovey with 1:12 left in the half, SBU had expanded to 13 points, 40-27. NSU closed the half with a mini 6-0 run to make it 40-33.

The first ten minutes and the last ten minutes of the second half were two different stories. The first ten minutes the Bearcats dominated by outscoring the Riverhawks 18-7. However, the last ten minutes, excluding the final ten seconds of the game, SBU managed only two field goals and 8 points. Meanwhile, NSU used a 30-7 run from the 10:34 to 2:38 mark to go from down 18 points, 58-40, to up 5 points, 70-65. NSU stretched their late lead as 12 points before coming away with 78-71 win.

Southwest Baptist returns to the floor Saturday afternoon when they welcome in Central Oklahoma for another MIAA showdown. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 PM at the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
