Bolivar, Mo. - On a chilly 35 degree afternoon, the Southwest Baptist University Baseball Team opened up their season with a 11-7 victory over East Central in the first game of a four game series. In relief, freshman Caleb Lasher was the winning pitcher while Damon Bass for East Central took the loss. Reigning MIAA Freshman of the Year, Andrew Meier, had a 3 for 4 day at the dish with three RBI's and two runs scored.
The Bearcats got things started in the bottom of the first when Carl Schwettmann had an RBI ground out that drove in Caleb Sneed. The SBU bats went quiet the next five innings and East Central scored six consecutive runs to take a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, SBU sent 13 batters to the plate that led to a 9 run outburst to go up 10-6. Catcher Tyler Slawson tied the game at 6 with a single to right field and Meier smacked a two run single to left to give SBU an 8-6 advantage. Returning All-American Hunter Hisky then smashed a double to left-center to extend the Bearcat lead to 10-6 that put East Central away.
Each team would add a run in the later innings before Southwest came away with the 11-7 win on Opening Day. SBU and East Central play game two of the series tomorrow at 1:00 PM from Dodson Field.
