Bearcats Fall on the Road to Arkansas Fort Smith

Fort Smith, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Fort Smith hosted the SBU Women's Basketball team Saturday evening. The Lions defeated the Bearcats 71-94, moving SBU's record to 2-5 (0-1 MIAA) on the season.
 
The home team struck first on a layup, but the Bearcats answered quickly thanks to a Sydney Bandy three pointer to open the game. SBU went up 5-2, scoring a Morgan Henderson layup following Bandy's three. The Lions scored 27 more points in the 1st quarter, SBU scoring 10 more, creating a 29-15 score going into the second quarter.
 
Morgan Henderson and Sydney Bandy got things going for SBU in the 2nd quarter, scoring eight points, but Arkansas Fort Smith kept up and their lead stayed around 16 points. Laura Vierkant and Zahria White chipped in on the scoring, but the Lions took a 22 point lead into halftime, 50-28.
 
Again it was Henderson putting the Bearcats on the board first in the third quarter, making a layup on an assist from Laura Vierkant. After a Zahria White good free throw, Henderson scored again, followed by layups from Vierkant and Tyra Kidd. With 5:17 left in the third, RayShee Smith hit a three to trim the Lion lead to 18, but the home team bounced back and extended their lead once more. Bailey Rezabek hit a jumper with 22 seconds to go in the quarter, but the Lions scored a layup with 4 seconds left, making a score of 74-52 to begin the fourth quarter.
 
Two Zahria White free throws were SBU's first points of the final quarter. Madison Strong and Laura Vierkant made layups to cut down on Arkansas Fort Smith's lead, but they kept answering. The Lions extended their lead to 26 with 5:26 remaining, but Sydney Bandy hit a three shortly after. SBU would be unable to catch up, creating a final score of 94-71 in favor of the Lions.
 
Zahria White had a final line of 16 points and 6 rebounds. Morgan Henderson had an almost identical night, finishing with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Sydney Bandy was the other Bearcat in double digits, recording 10 points, 3 rebounds, and an assist.
 
The next competition for the SBU Women's Basketball team will be on Thursday, December 6th when the Bearcats play at Washburn at 5:30.
