Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime Due to Penalty Shots

Bolivar, Mo. – The Men's Soccer Team played one of their three games this week Tuesday night against Southern Nazarene University. A game that took 107:28 was won by Southern Nazarene by a score of 2-1. The SBU Men move to 1-14 (0-6 MIAA) on the season.
 
Senior Ian Martin started in goal for the Bearcats. Josh Peloquin got the action going just 1:42 into the game with a shot that barely missed the inside post. Following a corner kick, Alberto Rodriguez fired a shot at the net, but it went just over the crossbar. SNU took the ball to the other side of the field and got a shot on goal, but Ian Martin was there to make the save. Late into the first half, Isaiah Waddy had the defense beat and fired a shot at the goalie, but the save was made. With 7 minutes left, Martin made another save off of an SNU header. Following an SBU penalty, the visitors fired one out from 25 yards, but Ian Martin again made the save. The first half was a defensive half, remaining tied 0-0 going into halftime.
 
Five minutes into the second half, SNU fired a rocket of a shot on goal, but Martin was there to make the save. The visitors fired two quick shots at the SBU goal, the first one was blocked and the second was saved, keeping the score 0-0 with 31 minutes left. Ian Cepeda got a shot on goal just a few minutes later, but couldn't put it in the back of the net. With 21 minutes left, SNU had the SBU defense beat, but Ian Martin came charging out to keep the visitors from getting a shot off. After a nice setup by Southern Nazarene, Abraham Wade made a great defensive play to keep the score 0-0. At the 78 minute mark, Josh Peloquin fired a shot on goal, but the goalie barely got a piece of it, keeping it out of the net. After an SBU foul in the box, SNU scored on the penalty shot, giving them a 1-0 lead. Their lead didn't last long though. With 4:30 left, SBU tied the game thanks to an Isaiah Waddy goal. Time would expire before either team could score again, forcing overtime.
 
After a wild cross, SNU put a shot on goal, but Ian Martin got a hand on it, keeping it out of the net. With only 3 minutes remaining in overtime, Southern Nazarene had an open look close to the SBU goal, but Martin made another save, keeping the score knotted at 1. Josh Peloquin fired a shot as time expired, but it fell wide left, causing a second overtime.
 
Early into the second overtime, SNU fired a shot from a ways out and Martin was able to make the stop. After a lot of action by SBU's goal, the SBU defense was able to keep the ball out of the net. Unfortunately, a foul was called on SBU in the box, leading to a penalty shot. Southern Nazarene converted, giving them a win with only 2:32 remaining in the second overtime period.
 
In his first start, Ian Martin made 9 saves on 11 shots on goal. Both of the goals scored were results from penalty shots. Josh Peloquin had 5 shots, 1 on goal, and Isaiah Waddy had 2 shots on goal, responsible for the SBU goal.
 
The Bearcats play again at home on Friday, November 2 at 1 PM, taking on MIAA opponent Lindenwood.
