Women's Soccer Claims Overtime Victory at MSSU

Joplin, Mo. – The SBU Women's Soccer team defeated MIAA opponent Missouri Southern in overtime Friday evening. The Bearcats move to 2-13-2 (2-7-1 MIAA) on the season.
 
MSSU attempted the first shots of the game, but the SBU defense kept the Lions out of the net. After some back and forth play, Southwest Baptist struck first thanks to a goal from Laura Manuel. It was a quiet rest of the first half, Sheena Nichol was the only player to get another shot off before the half ended.
 
Ashlyn Gibbs made two big saves just a few minutes into the second half to keep the score 1-0 in favor of SBU. Sheena Nichol responded with a shot on goal, saved by the Lion goalie. MSSU came back with two more shots, both saved by Gibbs. With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Lions tied the game at 2 goals each.
 
Raegan Edwards got a shot on goal a little over four minutes into the 10 minute overtime, but couldn't find the back of the net. With just 14 seconds left in overtime, Raquel Rodriguez was granted a corner kick. The ball was placed perfectly for senior Tessa Wagner, who put the ball in the back of the net, giving SBU an overtime victory 2-1.
 
Ashlyn Gibbs made 6 saves on the day, giving up only one goal.
 
The Bearcats wrap up their season at Northeastern State on Sunday, playing at 1 PM in Tahlequah, OK.
