Bolivar, Mo. - The Truman State Bulldogs visited Bolivar Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bearcats 38-14 in a GLVC matchup. The Bearcats move to 0-7 (0-5 GLVC) on the season.
Truman State received the ball first and had a long first drive. On 3rd and 5 from the SBU 18,
Tyler Curts made a tackle for loss holding the Bulldogs to a field goal after 7:53 of possession time. Truman's second drive ended with a failed fourth down attempt, a rush for no gain stopped by
Kevin Momah and
Rashawn McCain. The first quarter would end with a score of 3-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Bearcats moved the ball to the Truman 47 early in the second quarter thanks to a 25 yard
Eric Knight rush, but the drive would stall there, forcing SBU to punt. The Bulldogs had a one play drive starting with 9:18 remaining in the half, ending with a long touchdown to give them a 10-0 lead. SBU got the ball back with 1:30 remaining in the half. Starting on their own 28, the Bearcats drove all the way down to the Truman 25, highlighted by a 14 yard connection between
Bryse Salik and
Raldy Mena.
Alec Gathright kicked a field goal as time expired in the first half, but it fell wide left on a windy afternoon. Truman had the lead going into halftime, 10-0.
Bryce Cabrera had a rush for 20 yards on a 3rd and 9 on SBU's opening possession, but the Bearcats couldn't move the ball much more after that, forcing a punt. Truman began what would be another long drive, finishing with a touchdown, taking 6:12 off the clock and giving them a 17-0 lead. On the following drive, SBU attempted a punt, but it was blocked and returned for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 24-0 lead. Truman would score again on their first possession of the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 31-0. SBU began their first scoring drive with 11:33 to go, on their own 22. The scoring play was a 5 yard
Eric Knight touchdown, but the drive was highlighted by
Bryse Salik completions to Dylan Mountin,
Connor Ratcliff, and
Jarrett Massie who almost scored on their connection, but the diving Bearcat barely stepped out of bounds before his lunge toward the end zone. On the kickoff, Truman ran it back for a touchdown, giving them a 38-7 lead. SBU got the ball back with 7:29 remaining. On 2nd and 5 from the Truman 49,
Eric Knight took it to the house, cutting the Bulldog lead down to 38-14. Neither team would score again, creating a final of 38-14 in favor of Truman State.
Bryse Salik was 24 of 37 for for 199 yards on the day. In the rushing category,
Eric Knight gained 98 yards on 14 attempts and 2 touchdowns. Bryce Cabera rushed for 43 yards on 9 attempts.
Matt Lechuga led the way in the receptions column, hauling in 8 passes for 53 yards. Defensively,
Asa Carter collected 16 tackles on the night, 6 were solo.
Tyler Curts made 14 tackles, 6 of his were also solo.
The Bearcats will host the University of Indianapolis next Saturday with a kickoff set for 1 PM.
