Bolivar, Mo. – Southwest Baptist Women's Soccer hosted Northwest Missouri State in their Breast Cancer Awareness game on Sunday. Northwest came out on top by a score of 3-2. The loss brings SBU to 0-12-2 (0-6-1 MIAA) on the season.
Northwest got on the board quick, squeezing one in on the far side, hitting the side netting. Not long after,
Toni Paterno booted one at the visitor goal, landing just above the cross bar.
Raquel Rodriguez and
Lauren Hudak would follow with shots on goal, but the Northwest goalie made the stop. At the 20 minute mark, Rodriguez put another shot on goal that was saved. After back and forth play,
Maya Cofield evened the score with a goal right over the head of the Northwest goalie.
Sheena Nichol tried to put the Bearcats ahead with a shot on goal, but couldn't squeeze it past the goalie. Following a Northwest penalty,
Raquel Rodriguez attempted a shot from about 25 yards out that fell into the goalie's hands. The score would remain tied 1-1 going into halftime.
Starting the second half in a similar manner, Northwest landed a shot right over the head of
Ashlyn Gibbs, giving them a 2-1 lead with about 43 minutes remaining. Less than five minutes later, SBU evened the score at 2 a piece thanks to a successful penalty shot from
Raquel Rodriguez. Northwest had a scoring opportunity midway through the second half, but it fell wide right.
Raegan Edwards had a similar opportunity, but her shot fell wide left. Late in the second half, a foul in the box was called on SBU. Northwest converted on their penalty shot, taking a 3-2 lead with 5 minutes remaining. With about a minute remaining, Northwest tried to make it 4-2 with a shot on goal, but a diving
Ashlyn Gibbs kept the score 3-2. Neither team would score again, making 3-2 the final.
Raquel Rodriguez had 5 shots, all on goal, and 1 was a goal.
The SBU Women's Soccer team will host their last two home games of the season October 19th and 21st, hosting Kearney and FHSU at 4 PM and 2 PM respectively.
