Bolivar, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffon Women's Soccer team visited Bolivar Friday evening, taking on the Bearcats in a rainy conference matchup. The Griffons won 3-1 making SBU's record 0-11-2 (0-5-1 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats got the game going with the first shot from
Raegan Edwards just 33 seconds into the game, but it was blocked. SBU continued to apply pressure with a wide shot from
Maya Cofield and another shot from
Raegan Edwards that was just above the crossbar. The Griffons moved the ball down the field and put a shot on goal, but
Ashlyn Gibbs made the save. At the 23 minute mark,
Raegan Edwards put a shot on goal that almost rolled past the goalie, but the diving Griffon goalie made the save.
Laura Manuel followed a few minutes later with another shot on goal that was saved as well. MWSU broke the tie at 27:45 with a goal of their own. Going into halftime, the score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Griffons.
MWSU began the second half with a shot on goal, saved by Gibbs.
Raquel Rodriguez and
Raegan Edwards both got shots on goal shortly after, but couldn't find the back of the net. With a little less than 32 minutes remaining,
Raegan Edwards attempted a shot on goal, but Missouri Western made the save. At the 61:31 mark, the Griffons had a breakaway that looked like a for sure goal, but
Ashlyn Gibbs made an amazing save to keep the score 1-0. However, MWSU would find the back of the net shortly after, giving them a 2-0 lead. With a little over 25 minutes remaining,
Lauren Hudak scored an unassisted goal to cut the Griffon lead in half, 2-1. The Bearcats had two great opportunities just minutes after the goal, but neither made it past the goalie. After back and forth momentum, Missouri Western extended their lead with another goal. Neither team would score again, ending in a 3-1 favor of MWSU.
The Bearcats out-shot the Griffons 16-14 and landed 10 shots on goal.
Ashlyn Gibbs made 5 saves in the loss.
SBU Women's Soccer will be back in action Sunday, October 14th at 2 PM in their Breast Cancer Awareness game.
