Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist held a 61-60 lead with a minute left but a layup from Fort Hays with 30 seconds left to go up 62-61 ended the Bearcats hope of claiming their first MIAA conference win of the season. The loss drops Southwest Baptist's record to 8-6 (0-5 MIAA) and Fort Hays improves their record to 12-3 (3-3 MIAA).
The first quarter Fort Hays jumped out to a 20-9 lead, but on two baskets by Caylee Richardson and a triple from Madison Strong SBU drew within 20-16 at the end of the quarter. To start the second quarter, Fort Hays stretched their lead back to eight and seven at two different points. A 7-2 spurt from SBU to end the second quarter finished off by another Strong three gave the Tigers only a 34-32 lead at the break.
On the first possession of the third quarter, Southwest Baptist grabbed their first lead of the game when Ray'Shionne Smith knocked down a three of her own. The Bearcats would hold the lead for all but two minutes of the third quarter and got it as high as five with 1:02 left on a Megan Rosenbohm jumper. To begin the fourth quarter, Fort Hays would seize the lead back 52-49 two minutes in. With 4:03 remaining, Richardson helped SBU retake the lead 59-58 on her only three of the game. Richardson hit another jumper to give SBU their 61-60 advantage. After Hays made their basket with 30 seconds left, Richardson had two chances to put Southwest Baptist in front once again but her shots rolled off the rim.Â
Richardson posted her third double double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Both of those numbers were game highs. Smith and Morgan Henderson were the other Bearcats in double figures with 11 points a piece. Rosenbohm finished with a career high seven assists and chipped in eight rebounds and four points as well. For the game, SBU shot 35.1% from the floor, 42.1% on threes, and converted 81.3% of their free throws. SBU aslo outrebounded Fort Hays in the game, 39 to 37.Â
Southwest Baptist is back in action this Thursday when they travel to St. Joseph, Missouri to challenge Missouri Western. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 PM.Â
