Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist (12-7, 4-6 MIAA) heads out on the road to Emporia, Kansas to play a conference pair of games concludes with Emporia State, (12-5, 7-3 MIAA).
Previewing the Bearcats
The Bearcats hold a 12-7 (4-6 MIAA) record on the season. They come off a lost in overtime on the road against Washburn by a final score of 77-72. Over their 19 games, the Bearcats boast the second highest points per game in the conference with 76.9 ppg and the highest free throw percentage in the conference of 83.8%. Megan Rosenbohm and Caylee Richardson make the Bearcats go. Rosenbohm is the 23rd best scorer in the NCAA and the 1st leading scorer in the MIAA with 19.6 points per game. She also collects 5.7 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game, a conference leading 2.9 steals per game, and makes 90.6% of her free throws. Caylee Richardson averages a near double double with 16.6 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game on 58% shooting from the field and 87.8% at the line.
Previewing the Hornets
Emporia State enters the matchup with a record of 12-5 (7-3 MIAA). The Lady Hornets are coming off a 78-61 defeat at the hands of Nationally Ranked Central Missouri. Tyra Jones is averaging 13.7 points per game on 61.4% shooting from the field and 68.9% at the line. Emily Miller chips in 12.7 points per game, while shooting 42.3% from three and makes 42.6% from the field. Jacee Kramer averages 9.3 points per game while shooting 79.5% from the free throw line. As a team, Emporia State scores 75.5 points per game on 42.2% shooting from the floor. They also shoot 34.6% from the three point line which ranks 2nd in the MIAA. They also gather 40.8 rebounds per game which ranks 4th in the MIAA.
The Coaches
SBU head coach Kelsey Keizer is in her fourth season on the Bearcat bench after leading SBU back to the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City for the first time in three years. Coach Keizer led the Bearcats to back-to-back winning seasons (16-14, 7-12 MIAA last year) in 2015-16 and 2016-17. A feat that had not been done since the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. Coach Keizer holds a career coaching record of 55-51 and a 26-43 mark in the MIAA.
Jory Collins will begin his 8th season at Emporia State in 2017-18 looking to continue the tradition of Lady Hornet basketball. Collins is the first Lady Hornet basketball coach to have seven 20 win seasons in his first seven years at Emporia State. For his career Collins has a career record of 194-52 and a 112-37 in the MIAA.
All Time Series
Emporia State leads 37-12 in the all times series against Southwest Baptist. The Lady Hornets won both meetings against the Bearcats during the 2016-17 season 84-77 and 84-67.
Bearcats Last Outing
(1/24/18) Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist Women's Basketball team played their second straight overtime game on the road but this time Washburn defeated the Bearcats, 77-72. The loss drops SBU's record to 12-7 (4-6 MIAA) and Washburn improves to 14-5 (6-4 MIAA).
Caylee Richardson had another excellent game for Southwest Baptist with 24 points and 8 rebounds. She was 10 of 16 from the floor and made all three of her free throw shots. Despite struggling a bit from the floor, Megan Rosenbohm still filled up the stat line with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and a career best 7 steals. For the game, SBU struggled from the field as they shot 32.9% (24-73) and 24.0% (6-25) from three. They did make 78.3% (18-23) of their foul shots. Washburn more than doubled up the Bearcats on the boards, corralling in 62 rebounds to SBU's 29. Southwest Baptist did force 21 Ichabod turnovers and tallied 13 total steals.
The first quarter SBU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead behind five points from Richardson. The Bearcats would hold that seven point margin a couple times including an 18-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter began with a 10-2 Washburn spurt to give them their first lead of the game, 21-20. However, the Bearcats instantly reclaimed the edge on a Regan Tibbits trey. The Tibbits three ignited SBU for a 15-6 run, finished off by a old fashioned three point play from Richardson to give the Bearcats a 38-29 lead. Washburn would add a basket at the end of the half to make it 38-31.
Four minutes into the third quarter, Washburn knotted the game at 42. The Ichabods never retook the lead though as a Bailey Rezabek free throw pushed SBU's advantage back out to 53-48. Two more free throws from Richardson gave SBU a 55-52 lead going to the fourth. By the midway point of the fourth quarter, Washburn went on top, 61-59, for the first time since 21-20 early second quarter. The Ichabods stretched their margin to four a couple times but two Morgan Henderson free throws tied the game at 67 with 2:03 left. This would prove to be the final points of the quarter as both teams had chances to score down the stretch but could not convert.
In overtime, Washburn scored the first basket and did not give up the lead. SBU came within one, 71-70, on a free throw by Henderson. Unfortunately, Washburn went on to score six of the last eight points in overtime to claim the 77-72 victory.
Hornets Last Outing
January 24, 2018 - The Lady Hornets shot a season low 25% from the field in their 78-61 loss to #7 Central Missouri on Wednesday night. The loss snapped Emporia State's 27 game home court winning streak in White Auditorium.
The Lady Hornets shot just two for 21 from the field in the opening ten minutes as they fell behind 22-9 after the first period. Emporia State was down by 12 with 1:39 left in the half after a Morgan Laudan fast break layup. The Jennies then ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a 38-20 lead into the locker room.
A Morgan Fleming three-pointer with 8:43 left in the third quarter gave the Jennies a 19 point lead. The Lady Hornets would chip away at the lead and cut it to 46-36 with 3:36 remaining. On the next possession Emporia State played solid defense for the full 30 seconds but Paige Redmond banked in a 25 footer as the shot clock expired to push the lead back to 13 points. Emily Miller went to the line with 00.9 seconds left with a chance to cut the lead to ten but missed both free throws.
Emporia State was still within 12 points at 64-52 with 6:32 left when the Jennies went on a 12-2 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 76-54 with 2:37 remaining. Laudan and Jessica Wayne combined on a game ending 7-2 run for Emporia State to make the final score 78-61.
Emily Miller led Emporia State with 13 points and was joined in double figures by Jessica Wayne with ten points.
