Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist Women's Basketball team played their second straight overtime game on the road but this time Washburn defeated the Bearcats, 77-72. The loss drops SBU's record to 12-7 (4-6 MIAA) and Washburn improves to 14-5 (6-4 MIAA).
Caylee Richardson had another excellent game for Southwest Baptist with 24 points and 8 rebounds. She was 10 of 16 from the floor and made all three of her free throw shots. Despite struggling a bit from the floor, Megan Rosenbohm still filled up the stat line with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and a career best 7 steals. For the game, SBU struggled from the field as they shot 32.9% (24-73) and 24.0% (6-25) from three. They did make 78.3% (18-23) of their foul shots. Washburn more than doubled up the Bearcats on the boards, corralling in 62 rebounds to SBU's 29. Southwest Baptist did force 21 Ichabod turnovers and tallied 13 total steals.
The first quarter SBU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead behind five points from Richardson. The Bearcats would hold that seven point margin a couple times including an 18-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter began with a 10-2 Washburn spurt to give them their first lead of the game, 21-20. However, the Bearcats instantly reclaimed the edge on a Regan Tibbits trey. The Tibbits three ignited SBU for a 15-6 run, finished off by a old fashioned three point play from Richardson to give the Bearcats a 38-29 lead. Washburn would add a basket at the end of the half to make it 38-31.Â
Four minutes into the third quarter, Washburn knotted the game at 42. The Ichabods never retook the lead though as a Bailey Rezabek free throw pushed SBU's advantage back out to 53-48. Two more free throws from Richardson gave SBU a 55-52 lead going to the fourth. By the midway point of the fourth quarter, Washburn went on top, 61-59, for the first time since 21-20 early second quarter. The Ichabods stretched their margin to four a couple times but two Morgan Henderson free throws tied the game at 67 with 2:03 left. This would prove to be the final points of the quarter as both teams had chances to score down the stretch but could not convert.Â
In overtime, Washburn scored the first basket and did not give up the lead. SBU came within one, 71-70, on a free throw by Henderson. Unfortunately, Washburn went on to score six of the last eight points in overtime to claim the 77-72 victory.Â
SBU will be back in action on Sunday, January 28th as they travel to Emporia, Kansas to challenge the Hornets of Emporia State. Tip is scheduled for 1:30 PM.Â
