St. Joseph, Mo. - Caylee Richardson had a career high 27 points and posted her third consecutive double double that led Southwest Baptist to a double overtime 86-82 victory over Missouri Western. The win improves SBU's record to 10-6 (2-5 MIAA) and the loss drops Missouri Western's 10-7 (3-5 MIAA).
In addition to her 27 points, Richardson added 13 rebounds, two assists, and two steals. She shot a blazing 76.9% (10-13) from the field and converted 7 of her 11 free throws for 63.6%. Also, in double digits in the scoring department for the Bearcats were Morgan Henderson with 21 points, Megan Rosenbohm with 19, and Ray'Shionne Smith with 16. As a team, SBU shot 42.3% on field goals, 33.3 (4-12) on threes, and an amazing 86.4% (38-44) on free throws. They had the edge on the boards over the Griffons 37 to 32 and turned Missouri Western over 18 times.
In the first quarter, SBU had a tough time buying a basket from the field as they did not convert their first field goal attempt until 2:14 was left in the period. Free throws kept the Bearcats in it as 11 of their 15 points in the quarter came at the charity stripe. The second quarter the Bearcats heated up with Richardson scoring eight of their twelve points in a 12-4 spurt that placed them into a 27-23 lead. A layup from Rosenbohm to close the half gave SBU a 35-29 lead at the half.
To open the third quarter, SBU seized their largest lead of the game at 14 with another 12-4 run, capped by another Rosenbohm layup. The Griffons closed the quarter though with a 9-3 scoring advantage to trim the SBU lead to 52-46. SBU got their advantage back to 59-51 on a three point play from Richardson. From there, turnovers would haunt the Bearcats with the Griffons capitalizing and taking a 64-61 lead with 1:20 remaining. Free throws from Rosenbohm with 35 seconds to go knotted the score at 65. SBU got the final shot but missed, sending the game to its first overtime.
The first overtime Southwest Baptist jumped out to a 74-70 advantage on two consecutive baskets from Richardson. Missouri Western would then hit a three and SBU split a pair of free throws, opening a door for the Griffons. The Griffons took advantage as they nailed a shot with a second left to tie the game at 75 and head to a second overtime. The two teams switched roles in the second overtime with Missouri Western opening up a four point lead only to see SBU erase that and take an 82-80 advantage on four straight points from Smith. From there, SBU came up with huge defensive stops and iced the game on the free throw line to claim a 86-82 victory.
Southwest Baptist returns home Thursday night when they welcome in the Lindenwood Lions. The game will start at 5:30 PM from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
