Maryville, Mo. - Entering the fourth quarter, Southwest Baptist found themselves down 57-46 but they used a 29-13 scoring advantage in the fourth frame to propel them to a 75-70 victory over Northwest Missouri. The victory is SBU's first in the MIAA season and improves their record to 9-6 (1-5 MIAA). The loss makes Northwest's record tumble to 1-14 (0-7 MIAA).
The core three of Megan Rosenbohm, Caylee Richardson, and Morgan Henderson carried SBU on the day. Rosenbohm scored a game high 22 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the floor and 8 of 9 at the free throw line. Rosenbohm also collected eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals in the victory. Richardson posted her second straight double double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and 50% (5-10) shooting from the field. Morgan Henderson added 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the winning effort. For the game SBU converted 47.2% (25-53) of its field goals and 92.0% (23-25) of its free throws. Southwest Baptist won the rebounding battle, 33 to 27, over Northwest Missouri.
The first quarter began with each team trading leads back and forth. Northwest took a 10-9 lead with 5:59 left in the quarter that they would hold onto until the fourth quarter. A jumper from Rosenbohm brought the Bearcats to within two, but Northwest claimed a 20-16 lead at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, SBU drew within a point on a another jumper from Rosenbohm. However, Northwest got their lead as high as seven at three different points and would take a 39-32 advantage into the halftime break.
To start the third quarter, a layup from Richardson trimmed the deficit to five. Over the next few minutes, Northwest would gradually stretch their lead back to nine points and would eventually get that margin to ten points with 2:35 left in the period. That Northwest lead would be 11 points, 57-46, heading to the fourth. Starting the fourth quarter, behind an 11-3 run, SBU would get back in the game and only trail by just three points. At the 2:55 mark of the fourth quarter, a Monique Manuel jumper gave SBU their first lead since it was 9-8 in the first quarter. Northwest Missouri quickly retook the lead at two separate points but that is when SBU showed its mettle. A Henderson layup with 1:15 left put SBU in front for good. Southwest Baptist outscored Northwest Missouri 10-3 in the final two minutes on their way to a 75-70 conference road win.
SBU will next be in action on Monday, January 15, in a matchup against Missouri Western. Tip is slated for 5:30 PM in St. Joseph.
