Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team completed their third straight MIAA sweep on Sunday afternoon at Washburn, taking down the Ichabods 5-2. With the win the Bearcats improve to 24-11 (14-7 MIAA) on the season.
Strong pitching and productive hitting again were keys to the Bearcats success. After a pair of scoreless innings opened up the game, the Bearcats took the lead in the top half of the third.
Caleb Sneed hit a one out single through the left side followed two batters later by a single to center from
Hunter Hisky to put runners on the corners with two outs.
Chance Wolfe, who reached on a fielder's choice, would come home on a Washburn error to give SBU a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats added to their lead in the top half of the fourth when
Jovany Urbieta and
Andrew Meier led the inning off with back-to-back singles.
Clint Jack then had an rbi groundout, followed by an rbi single from
Cody Massey to extend the lead to 3-0. SBU then added two more runs in the top half of the fifth.
Sean Murley opened the inning up with a single through the left side and two batters later came home on an rbi single from Meier. Meier then came home on an rbi double from
Clint Jack to give the Bearcats a 5-0 lead. Washburn would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth, and another in seventh, but the Bearcats would cruise to the 5-2 victory.
On the mound
Drew Wagner would pick up the victory, throwing 5.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Chance Wolfe would close out the game in the bottom of the ninth, allowing one base runner while striking out one to earn his 6th save of the season.
The Bearcats will return home on Tuesday, April 11 when they host Central Missouri in game one of a three-game series spread across three weeks. Opening pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
