Bearcats Come up Short in Two Games at Northeastern Sate

Tahlequah, Okla. -  The SBU Softball team fell in a pair of MIAA games at NSU on Saurday afternoon. Following the series with NSU the Bearcats fall to 26-14 (10-8 MIAA) on the season.

Jaidyn Mawhinney would single on the first pitch of game one to get things started for SBU, Megan Schellert would follow with a single of her own. After a NSU error would allow Stormy Christerson to load the bases Lauren Strobel would hit an opposite field grand slam giving SBU a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. The Riverhawks would battle back in the bottom half of the inning by scoring three runs and cutting SBU's lead to 4-3. Both pitchers would settle in after that and each team would be held scoreless through the 3rd inning, NSU would score three runs in the 4th inning to take a 6-4 lead. Mawhinney and Schellert would once again get back-to-back singles in the 5th inning and an NSU error would allow Mawhinney to score and reduce the NSU lead to 6-5. The Riverhawks would add to their lead in the 5th inning  by scoring three runs and taking a 9-5 lead. NSU would score two more runs in the 6th and they would take an 11-5 lead into the 7th inning. Schellert and Christerson would open the 7th inning with singles, and Catlin Evans would drive in a run with a sacrifice fly however SBU would fall 11-6.

Mawhinney would open up game two with a single, but SBU would fail to score in the 1st inning. Claire Miler would strike out the side in the bottom of the inning leaving the game scoreless after one inning. Evans and Darien Robinson would start the 2nd inning with base hits as SBU would have two on with no outs. Following a sacrifice bunt from Alexis Dock, Kori Hillenburg would put the Bearcats on top 1-0 with a sacrifice fly. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 4th inning when NSU pushed across three runs to give them a 3-1 lead. The Bearcats would capitalize on two Riverhawk errors scoring one run and cutting NSU's lead to 3-2. The Riverhawks stretched their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning and would go on to win the game by that score. 

Stormy Christerson led the Bearcats by collecting five hits on the day, Megan Schellert and Jaidyn Mawhinney each had four. Lauren Strobel had a team high four RBI's. 

SBU will return to action on Friday, April 14th as they host Emporia State in an MIAA doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM from the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar, Mo.
