Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up their eighth straight MIAA victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Washburn 3-1. With the win the Bearcats improve to 23-10 (13-7 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats jumped on top of the Ichabods early, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning of play. With one out in the inning
Jovany Urbieta and
Cody Massey hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. The Bearcats took advantage of a throwing error by WU, plating the first run of the inning and taking a 1-0 lead. After a pair of scoreless innings the SBU offense went back to work in the top of the fifth. The Bearcats loaded the bases singles from
Clint Jack and
Blake Hobbs before
Caleb Sneed reached on a fielder's choice.
Chance Wolfe then drew a bases loaded walk to extend the Bearcat lead to 2-0. SBU added another run in the eighth off of another Washburn error, taking a 3-0 lead.
The lead was more than enough for starting pitcher
Andrew Meier who held a no-hitter through the first 7.0 innings of play. Meier would finish the game throwing 7.0 innings allowing one run off of two hits with six strikeouts.
Jay Kaufman came in the close out the victory for the second straight game, throwing 2.0 innings to earn his second save of the season.
The Bearcats will look to finish off the series sweep against Washburn on Sunday, April 9. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from Topeka, Kansas.
