Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up their seventh straight MIAA contest victory with a 4-1 win at Washburn on Friday evening. With the win the Bearcats improve to 22-10 (12-7 MIAA) on the season.
Washburn jumped on top early, plating a run in the bottom half of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Bearcat pitching would shut down the Ichabods for the final eight innings. The Bearcats struck in the top of the fifth, loading the bases off of a WU error,
Andrew Meier single, and
Clint Jack walk.
Cody Massey then hit an rbi single to right field, followed two batters later by a bases loaded walk from
Chance Wolfe to give SBU a 2-1 lead.
The Bearcats extended their lead in the sixth off of an rbi single from Meier.
Sean Murley led the inning off with a single, followed two batters later with a single from
Jovany Urbieta before Meier singled home Murley to extend the lead to 3-1. Meier again knocked in a batter in the top of the eighth, doubling to left field to bring home
Nelson Muniz who led the inning off with a single.
Jay Kaufman would enter the game and shut down the Ichabods for the final two innings as SBU claimed the 4-1 victory.
Brian Womack moved to 7-2 on the season by throwing 7.0 innings allowing 1 unearned run to go along with 5 strikeouts.
Andrew Meier led the Bearcats with 3 hits and a pair of rbi while
Cody Massey had 2 hits with an rbi in the victory.
SBU will return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they continue their three-game series at Washburn. Opening pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Topeka, Kansas.
