Oklahoma City, Okla. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team advanced to day two of the MIAA Tournament by splitting games with Pittsburg State and Central Missouri.
Game one was a pitcher's duel, and
Claire Miller shined for the Bearcats. Miller would throw 13 innings for SBU and had 10 strikeouts while allowing six hits. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 14th when Pittsburg State would push across the only run of the game winning 1-0.
Alexis Dock led SBU in game one getting two hits and getting on base a total of three times.
In game two SBU would take on Central Missouri.
Kacey Ayers-Evans shut down the the Jennies over the first three innings as the game was scoreless going into the fourth inning. UCM would open the scoring in the fourth inning and took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning. The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Megan Schellert singled to open the bottom of the sixth inning and
Stormy Christerson followed with a walk.
Yezzania Gonzalez pinch ran for Schellert, and on a UCM wild pitch Gonzalez scored from second which tied the game 1-1.
Dana Graves hit an RBI single up the middle giving SBU a 2-1 lead, and on a failed pick-off attempt the Bearcats pushed their third run across, going into the seventh inning leading 3-1. Ayers-Evans retired the Jennies in order to secure the win for SBU. Ayers-Evans finished the game with five strikeouts.
SBU returns to play on Friday, April 28 when they take on Missouri Western in the MIAA Tournament. First pitch is set for 10:00 am from Oklahoma City, Okla.
