Pittsburg, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team earned a double-header split at Pittsburg State on Sunday afternoon, winning game one 9-5 before falling in game two 7-1. At the conclusion of the day, the Bearcats now stand at 28-13 (18-10 MIAA) on the season.
In the opening game, the Bearcats jumped on the top in the top of the second. With one out in the inning,
Jovany Urbieta drew a walk followed by a single from
Andrew Meier. After a double steal, Urbieta eventually came home on a wild pitch to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth the Bearcats added to their lead. With one out, Urbieta singled to left field, followed by a single through the left side from Meier. Urbieta then came home on a sacrifice fly from
Cody Massey to extend the lead to 2-0. However, Pittsburg State responded with a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2 after four.
The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh inning.
Cody Massey drew a one out walk followed by an bunt single from
Clint Jack coupled with a PSU error to put runners on second and third.
Caleb Sneed then hit a two-rbi single to right center to give SBU a 4-2 lead.
Chance Wolfe then singled, followed by a
Hunter Hisky walk to load the bases.
Sean Murley then hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-2. Once again, PSU responded in the bottom half of the inning by tying the game at 5-5.
In the top of the eighth the Bearcats took the lead for good. With one out in the inning Meier singled through the right side, followed by a bunt single from Massey. Jack then hit an rbi single through the left side to give SBU a 6-5 lead. With runners on second and third, Wolfe hit an rbi single to the pitcher followed by a Pittsburg State error to extend the lead to 8-5. A
Nelson Muniz solo homerun in the top of the ninth extended the lead to 9-5, as the Bearcats would take game one 9-5.
In game two PSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings of play. A
Blake Hobbs rbi double in the top of the fourth brought home Murley as SBU trailed 6-1. The Bearcats were unable to get any closer as they would eventually fall in game two 7-1.
SBU will close out their three-game series at Pittsburg State on Monday, April 24. Opening pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. from Pittsburg, Kansas.
