Strong Pitching Leads SBU to Split with Emporia State

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University Softball team split a pair of games with Emporia State on Friday afternoon. Following the series with ESU, SBU improves their record to 27-15(11-9 MIAA) on the season.

In game one both teams would get great efforts from their starting pitchers. Each pitcher would retire the side in order in the first inning. Jaidyn Mawhinney would get a two out base hit in the third inning however SBU would fail to bring her in. Kacey Ayers-Evans would shut down the Hornets over the next four innings keeping the game scoreless going into the bottom of the seventh inning. SBU would fail to score in teh seventh which would send the game into extra innings. ESU would get a run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 1-0 lead and would win the game by that score. 

Claire Miller would dominate in game two allowing only two hits. Catlin Evans would get a one out base hit in the bottom of the first inning, following a fielder's choice and an Emporia State error SBU would have runners on the corners. Lauren Strobel would single through the left side giving SBU a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Miller would shine over the next two innings allowing only one base runner. Mawhinney singled to begin the bottom of the third inning for the Bearcats. after an Evans sacrifice bunt which would advance Mawhinney to second; Stormy Christerson singled to left field scoring Mawhinney. SBU would take a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning. MIller struck out the side in the fourth, and retired the side in order in the fifth. Mawhinney and Megan Schellert would each single in the bottom of the fifth inning giving SBU runners on first and second with one out. Strobel would drive Mawhinney in again with a base hit to left field putting SBU up 3-0. Miller would finish the game retiring six of the last seven batters to earn her 11th victory of the season. 

On offense SBU was lead by Jaidyn Mawhinney who collected four hits while Lauren Strobel led the team with two RBI's. In the circle Kacey Ayers-Evans and Claire Miller each threw complete games. Miller struck out seven in her shutout victory.

The Bearcats return to action Saturday, April 15th when the host Washburn in an MIAA doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM from Bolivar, Mo.
