Bolivar, Mo. - Strong pitching from
Andrew Meier and
Drew Wagner led the SBU Bearcats to a double-header sweep against Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats took game one 5-4, followed by a 7-2 game two victory to complete the series sweep and move to 21-9 (11-7 MIAA) on the season.
Andrew Meier started out strong, holding a no-hitter through the first three innings of play. The Bearcats broke through in the bottom of the fourth to give SBU their first lead of the game. With two outs in the inning,
Sean Murley drew a walk, stole second, and came home on an rbi single from
Nelson Muniz giving SBU a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless top of the fifth for the Lions, SBU extended their lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Cody Massey led the inning off with a single, and after an MSSU error, the Bearcats had runners on the corners with one out. SBU extended their lead to 2-0 on a wild pitch, and took a 3-0 lead when
Chance Wolfe hit an rbi single to center. Wolfe advanced to second on another MSSU error, stole third, and came home on a Murley single to give SBU a 4-0 lead. After another scoreless inning by MSSU, the Bearcats plated another run on another wild pitch to take a 5-0 lead heading into the seventh.
The Lions got two runs back in the top of the seventh, cutting the Bearcat lead to 5-2, while tacking on another two runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half of the eighth a
Jovany Urbieta singled extended the lead to to 6-4 before Wolfe shut down the Lions in the 9th to earn his 5th save of the season in the 6-4 game one victory.
Andrew Meier picked up the victory, throwing 7.0 innings allowing only 3 hits and 2 unearned runs.
In game two the Lions were the first to score, taking a 1-0 lead after a half inning of play. However, SBU answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at 1-1.
Caleb Sneed reached on an MSSU error to lead off the game, and came home two batters later on an rbi single up the middle from
Hunter Hisky to tie the game at 1-1. Southern again took the lead in the third, scoring an unearned run, before the Bearcats responded to again tie the game. Sneed doubled to lead the inning off, and came home on an MSSU error to tie the game at 2-2.
Starter
Drew Wagner was solid over the next four innings, allowing only two hits as his offense gave him the first lead of the game. In the bottom of the fifth Sneed recorded his second hit of the day, and after a
Chance Wolfe single and MSSU wild pitch the Bearcats had runners on second and third with one out. Hisky then doubled to left center, scoring both runners, and after a single from Murley, Muniz singled home Hisky to extend the Bearcat lead to 5-2. SBU added another run in the sixth off of an rbi double by Massey, and another in the eighth off a sacrifice fly from Sneed, as the Bearcats would go on to claim the 7-2 victory. On the mound
Drew Wagner threw 7.0 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) to go along with 6 strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Bearcats collected 24 hits on the day, from 9 different players, led by four from
Nelson Muniz and
Cody Massey.
Hunter Hisky knocked in three on the day, while
Caleb Sneed scored four runs.
SBU will return to action on Tuesday, April 4 when they host Drury in a non-conference contest. Opening pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
